Chapter Text
Ezra. That’s my real name.”
“I had a real name once. It has been so long I do not remember it.” The grief that cloaked him almost knocked Ezra to the ground. “But she called me Maul.”
“Maul?” He frowned. “Kanan told me about someone named Maul. The Lord of Crimson Dawn, that saved him and a bunch of other Jedi after the Empire.”
“Kanan? I don’t remember any Jedi named Kanan.”
“Um, the Grand Inquisitor called him Caleb.” Ezra scratched the back of his head.
“Ah, Caleb Dume! The first one. I remember him. You know him?”
“Yeah, he’s my master. He’s here somewhere. I’m trying to find him.”
Maul sighed. “I will help you.”
Ezra followed him to a ragged cliff with an opening at the top. “I can sense them. They’re up there. Come on.”
“I will wait until you reach the top in case you fall.”
Ezra shrugged, starting to climb. It wasn’t as far as he’d fallen and didn’t take too long. Kanan and Ahsoka were standing in front of an Inquisitor on their knees.
“Ezra? You okay?”
“Yeah I’m fine. Um, I ran into someone who said he knows you.”
Kanan frowned. “What kind of someone?”
Maul climbed out of the pit behind him. “You are both much taller than last I saw you.”
It took Kanan a long moment to respond. “Maul.”
“I was once. Now I am no one.”
Ahsoka rested her hands on her lightsabers. “What are you doing here?”
“Searching for the means to destroy Sidious for all he took from me. I believe you do the same.”
Ezra frowned, looking between all of them. “I feel like I missed something.”
“So do I.” Kanan kept his lightsaber by the Inquisitor’s neck. “You’re missing a few family members.”
“They’re gone.” Maul sank to his knees and the pain almost knocked Ezra to his. “Sidious took them from me. And I will destroy his precious Empire for it.”
Kanan’s face changed. “I’m so sorry.”
”I thought I would find the means to save them here. Instead I am marooned and I know they are long gone. Collateral damage of my own hubris. Sith were never meant to be happy.”
