Work Text:
Mike didn’t like hospitals. The weird too clean antiseptic smell, the overbearing lights, the bad memories. Mike had a lot of reasons to hate the hospital, but Will had even more, and so when Will needed surgery Mike didn’t hesitate to be by his side.
It was a very simple, routine surgery. Will’s tonsils, of all things, had to be removed. After everything they had been through it really shouldn’t have been that big of a deal, but Mike was nothing if not a chronic overthinker and so he’d been stressed and on edge, terrified of something going wrong, ever since Will had been wheeled into surgery earlier that morning.
Luckily Mike’s endless worrying had been over nothing and the surgery had gone off without a hitch. Will had only actually been gone for around 40 minutes and now he and Ms. Byers were just waiting for him to wake up from the anesthesia. The doctor had been keeping track of all of his vital signs and probably looking at some other stuff that Mike didn’t know about and decided that Will should be good to go whenever he woke up.
Ms. Byers had just stepped out to talk more with the doctor about how to take care of Will once at home, something she’d already been told multiple times now but if anyone was a bigger worrier than Mike then it was Ms. Byers, when Will started to wake up.
Mike quickly took one of Will’s hands in his and leaned forward into his line of sight so that he didn’t get freaked out when he woke up in a hospital room. Will’s eyes slowly opened, revealing bleary hazel. Mike smiled at him, happy to see Will awake and at the cute, confused look on his face.
“Hey Will, how are you feeling?” Mike asked softly. At the noise, Will’s eyes slowly started focusing on Mike, and once they did his face took on a brilliant flush.
“I-I’m okay,” Will said. “Are you an angel?” he asked him, a little dazed.
Mike laughed, more than a little baffled by the question.
“What, no. I’m just Mike.”
“Mike,” Will said, like he was testing the way the name sounded in his mouth. “You’re really pretty.”
Mike could feel his face flush at the compliment. He was confused for a moment why Will didn’t seem to know who he was until he remembered that a nurse had briefly mentioned that Will might be a little confused when he first woke up. This was more disorientation than Mike had been expecting, but Will was being very cute so he wasn’t gonna complain.
Mike smiled widely at Will, slightly teasing, not that Will could tell, and asked “you really think so?”
“Mm-hmm,” Will nodded his head very seriously.
Mike felt Will start to move his hand, and it seemed like he noticed for the first time that it was being held. He looked down at their clasped hands in slight shock before going a little redder than before.
“You’re holding my hand?” He said, clearly dumbfounded.
Mike chuckled, “yeah, do you want me to let go?” he asked, already pretty sure of Will’s answer.
He felt Will’s hand tighten around his own. “No no no,” Will said quickly, “I have two hands, I can use the other one.”
Mike didn’t have to wonder for long what it was that Will needed his hand for as he quickly lifted the unoccupied one and gently placed it on Mike’s cheek. Mike raised his eyebrow at him and Will gave him a slightly goofy smile in return.
“You have really nice cheekbones, like a greek statue,” he ran his fingers lightly over Mike’s cheek and the bridge of his nose, “and your freckles are so cute.” He moved his hand again, this time going to brush it gently through Mike’s hair, “and your hair is cool.”
Will was being so cute that Mike couldn’t help himself from leaning down and giving him a kiss. He pulled back quickly to see Will’s reaction. He looked entirely stunned for a second before his face turned redder than Mike had ever seen and a bright smile took over his entire face. His hand left Mike’s hair to touch his lips in wonder.
“What was that for,” he questioned.
“I think you’re pretty too,” Mike told him.
Will’s smile somehow got wider and he was looking at Mike like he’d hung the stars in the sky just for him.
“Really?” he asked, to which Mike smiled and nodded. “Wow.”
Will suddenly got shy, looking away from Mike and fidgeting with the top of his blanket.
“Uhm, do you want to be my boyfriend?”
Mike smiled wider, Will was being so cute. He squeezed Will’s hand and told him, “we’re already boyfriends.”
At that Will’s eyes grew wide and quickly snapped back to Mike’s face.
“We are!?”
Mike laughed a little, “yeah, we’ve been dating for over a year.”
“Wow,” Will said again, amazed. “I’m so lucky.”
Mike was sure that he had a disgustingly besotted look on his face and was suddenly glad that the rest of The Party wasn’t there to see it. He heard the door open behind him and turned to see Ms. Byers slipping back in. She smiled at Mike before looking over at Will.
“Oh, honey, you’re awake! Are you feeling alright?”
Will smiled brightly at his mom.
“I’m feeling great mom! Have you met my boyfriend Mike? Isn’t he pretty?”
Mike felt his face flush and gave Ms. Byers an embarrassed smile. It was a good thing that they had already come out to her before this. She sent an amused smile Mike’s way and replied to Will.
“Yes, I’ve met Mike, sweetie. He’s a good kid.”
Will hummed happily at that, “I’m so glad you guys get along.”
Mike chuckled and said to Ms. Byers, “he’s a little out of it.”
“I can tell,” she laughed. “I’ve already taken care of everything with Will’s checkout so we can head out whenever he’s ready to go.”
Will was a little unsteady on his feet but manages to get changed out of his hospital gown and into his clothes on his own and is able to walk out of the hospital with Mike’s help. Once Ms. Byers had pulled the car around, Will decided to forgo sitting in the front seat to sit in the back with Mike and lean against him. Ms. Byers gave them a warm smile before starting to drive. Mike rested his head against the back of his seat and closed his eyes. This had been a much less stressful experience than he had been expecting. He grinned, he couldn’t wait to tease Will about this later.
