I read a fic a long while back, wherein the Red Hood had been an urban legend in Gotham before the Joker stole the name - kind of like a robin hood character. Not sure if it's canon or not (i don't *think* it is) but I've always liked the idea of it being more meaningful than just Joker's old name, that Jason had another reason for taking it up and to keep it for so long after. I don't run with that in this fic specifically, but it has deeply influenced how I write the identity.

Fri 09 Jun 2023 10:43AM EDTYes! The idea is that any "named" Rogue will be replaced if something happens to them, just like a hero. This doesn't always mean it happens immediately, and there's never a clean or easy line of succession (sometimes there can be 2+ of somebody running around and a battle royale for the name or something). Prominent citizens will also get replaced - Commissioner Gordon, the Mayor, etc etc. Gotham likes all its children. The actual identify of the individual behind the title doesn't matter.
It isn't so much that he broke the curse; he just assumed the weight of the identity. If Jason ever slips up a Joker could come back. If there is no successor to the Red Hood, it might revert back, etc. But he pulls a Tim - does it willingly - and that ensures he'll remain himself. He just has to monitor his own actions at all times, make sure he's sufficiently 'in character' as the Red Hood. Luckily he's a drama nerd so

Just. Taking the concept of the Mantles being their own thing to such an extreme that they'll seek out a barer if left empty, combining it with Name Magic, and tangling it all up in a Gordian knot that the reader has just enough time to start properly mull it all over when Jason shows up with the most narrative perfect solution to the whole mess. Beautiful. I have been rotating this in my mind since I first read it months ago.Copperpot

Also loves how this gives a dark spin with the replacement Batman's too, azreal batman after Bruce's back was broken, and tim had to keep him in check , and then later when dick was batman because there NEEDS to be A batman and joker and a robin. such a neat fic!
