Chapter 1: (Don't) Worry

Chapter Text

“Dad, may I ask why we’re moving to Gotham?” Jazz asked as her parents were packing the GAV with almost everything from their home and laboratory.

“Because of the ghosts, Jazzy!” Jack Fenton shouted. “Gotham’s infested with them! And now that our portal’s gone, we need a place with enough ambient ectoplasm to jump-start a new portal! It was a mistake to set it up in Amity, and it was most likely luck that the first portal managed to work!”

Danny looked ready to interject and say something, but shut his mouth after a moment of consideration. Nothing like telling your parents that dying in their life’s work was the only reason it worked would get any brownie points.

“And how do we know that Gotham’s infested with them? Just because there’s ambient ectoplasm doesn’t mean there’s always going to be ghosts. We haven’t even heard news of the GIW setting up shop in that town.”

“Honey, I know that you’re not concerned with the ghosts, but the crime rates in Gotham.” Maddie managed to parse out. “If you’re worried about all of Gotham’s rogues, don’t worry! There’s a reason half of our revenue comes from self and home defense products!”

“Which only work on ghosts.”

“And can be recalibrated for any normal intruder!” Maddie finished compacting all the suitcases and boxes in the trunk, and Jack came over to slam the door shut.

“Besides, none of Gotham’s rogues can compare to the Fenton family! We’ve smelt worse things than Scarecrow’s fear toxin, or anything that Gotham has thrown at us!”

“And you see that as a justification to go there?”

“I thought you wanted to go to Gotham University to study psychology!”

“Yes, but I don’t want Danny to have to worry about the Joker trying to barge in during his midterms! You know how Danny’s grades have tanked ever since ghosts have started pouring into amity!”

Maddie stopped, and considered Jazz. She pulled her goggles off, and set her hands on Jazz’s shoulders. “I know that you’re concerned about Danny, but right now, he’s managed to come back from all F’s to mostly B’s. I know you feel like you need to protect Danny, and that’s an admirable goal. However I don’t like how you’re making it your life’s work to raise him. You need to have time to spend for yourself, find your own path. Leave the parenting to us.”

“Yeah.” Jazz muttered. As Maddie left her, satisfied with her effort, Jazz muttered under her breath “As if you’ve ever been good parents to Danny.”

The only person who heard her was Danny, who edged closer to his sister, and gave her a small hug before they were all sitting in the GAV, careening down the highway towards Gotham.
