“Steve,” Tony says, “that bruise was such a pretty purple that I almost asked you to sign it. It was a Goddamn work of art. And about the size of Rhode Island.”
Steve doesn’t cheat. He maybe plays rougher than he sometimes should.
“Doesn’t sound too bad,” he says, finally, because he doesn’t know what else to say. He’s careful with everyone, does his best to play by the rules, and then Tony Stark skates by him grinning, and Steve’s chasing him with everything he has. “Isn’t Rhode Island the smallest state?”
Tony laughs at him, and he sounds so delighted that Steve squints directly at the sun to stop his smile. “You know what, Rogers? I think it is.” And then he laughs, one more time, sounds pleasantly surprised. “You’ll have to do better next year.”

“I was gonna fix that,” Clint says, holding up the multimeter he stole from SHIELD. “I looked it up on Google.”
Marie pats him on the shoulder. “I know you were, kiddo. But he got there first.”
Roy’s been all over the building, apparently, from the roof to the basement. He’s usurped Lucky’s place as everyone’s favorite, and Clint’s not jealous, but Lucky’s got a sensitive heart. “They still love you, pal,” Clint tells him, as he fluffs up Lucky’s ears and then sneaks him an extra slice of pizza. “He’s just got that new shine to him, that’s all.”

There’s so much drama in this city, so much convoluted infighting between villains in improbable getups, and every time he finds a decent bar where he can get a quiet drink, some asshole in spandex levels the place to make a point.
At least the rats have some dignity. At least they’ve embraced what they are. Bigger than they should be, fed on a charcuterie of crazy that even the New York rats can’t claim, but they’re no flashier or fancier than their more reasonably-sized cousins. He nudges one out of his way as he steps out of a dive in the Narrows, and it hisses at him with perfunctory defiance before trundling its meaty bulk down the sidewalk.
“Goddamn thing’s the size of a corgi,” Logan says, as he struggles to light his cigar in Gotham’s ever-present drizzle.
The rat looks back over its shoulder at him, and Logan would swear to God that it smirks at him.
Christ. He hates this city.
He sighs and leans back against the wall, regrets it immediately when one of the stupid gargoyles on the nearest building drips rainwater spit all down his face.
“This fucking town,” he says, snarling it to nobody, and a passing kid in a hoodie chimes in, “Amen,” all earnest and devout, like that’s the only kind of prayer a Gotham kid ever learns.

Chapter 10:
The guidebooks say you shouldn’t ask a wight how they died. Don’t invite an emotional response. Don’t remind them of the details.
But Tony’s having an emotional response. Tony’s thinking about a fourteen-year-old kid being murdered in his car.
Chapter 15:
Steve wonders what happened in that cave, how many pieces of himself Tony lost. Lately, Steve’s been watching old interviews of Tony from before he was taken, and it’s like watching a stranger, like meeting some happier twin he never knew Tony had.
Chapter 16:
But back before, when Bucky was human, it was a thing you did in secret, something you were so ashamed of that you’d fight men in bars for saying it out loud. Even before it was violent, it was shameful, and Bucky never wanted to hurt anyone, never wanted to do something to someone that they’d lie about later.
Chapter 17: sequel to part 2 chapter 31
Clint doesn’t think much of anything these days. That’s a choice he made a year or so back. Held his mind underwater until it drowned.

Author's notes from each chapter! As before, I have to condense: see originals for prompts and warnings. Adding some character names.
- Here's a short Harry Potter AU about a hit squad of cursed assassins. (Jason, Wade, Frank, Bucky)
- Here's a fantasy AU about Tony and Steve who could fight a dozen wars and still never really figure their shit out.
- SHIELD finding Bucky before Steve.
- Here's a quick fic about Tony and Clint. I feel like every time I write these two, someone's having a crisis. This time, it's Tony's crisis. Warnings for Tony's ex-boyfriend being a cheating asshole.
- CloudAtlas asked for Clint/Nat/Bucky, and that's where post-apocalyptic (Wh p3 ch 31) was heading. Also, I keep having bad dreams about being attacked by bears. So here's Clint being literally hunted by a grizzly. He is also being metaphorically hunted by Bucky and Nat.
- Look, nobody asked for more of my feelings about Bruce Wayne and Phil Coulson, but here they are anyway. I just think if you're a superhero in crisis wandering the celestial plane, you could do a lot worse than Phil Coulson for a guide. So here's some magical realism about Phil Coulson, who is definitely dead, and Bruce Wayne, who is technically alive.
- Clint Barton and Jason Todd, trying to figure out how to solve the problem of the Winter Soldier.
- It's not whumptober without a grim fantasy AU. But, unlike chapter two, people have swords in this one. And they use them. So warnings for violence, disquieting magic, and a generally bleak world. (Frank, Jason
- I'm not sure I'll ever write a long fic about what happens during the Snap, but here's a short one about Clint and Jason.
- We haven't been spooky enough yet. So here's a ghost story with Tony Stark and Jason Todd, just to keep everything legitimate.
- (Wh p3 ch 29) Regency AU about Jason Todd taking offense to Clint Barton's father functionally marrying him off to cover his gambling debts. Here's the next part of that. I don't know anything about Regency AUs, and, honestly, I think it's funnier if I refuse to learn. The Regency isn't going to arrest me. I am significantly outside its jurisdiction.
- Twelve days in, and it's finally time for some werewolves. Spooky season! (Clint, Coulson)
- This post-apocalyptic zombie fic is for the anon who asked for Frank Castle and Dick Grayson. As usual, there are no zombies in my zombie fics.
- I'm back with an absolutely ludicrous pirate AU. Be advised that the only research I did for this was investigating how old the phrase “son of a bitch” is, and I am thrilled to report that it dates back to at least the 17th century. So here's the beginning of a love story about two pirates and a spy. (Clint, Bucky, Jason)
- What would've happened if Tony's first attempt at escaping the Ten Rings failed? You can really tell the cold meds wore off when I wrote this ruthless little tragedy. Yikes. Warnings for: references to captivity, torture, and dismemberment, alcoholism, violence, and just generally being really sad, wow. (Steve, Tony)
- So here's the other winterhawk idea I had, for the alternate prompt: broken.
- (Wh p2 ch 31) We are revisiting the post-apocalypse. I still have no idea who's going to end up with who in this universe, and I should really figure that out before I write more of it.
- Somehow, against all odds and sense, I have written another Harry Potter AU. As a general reminder, my knowledge of this universe ends with the seventh book. And much like the Regency, I refuse to Google a damn thing. Prompt: tortured for information. Warnings for this one: someone is tortured for information. Also, there is some consideration of suicide and a lot of PTSD.
- Can't believe we've made it this far into whumptober without hockey showing up even once. So here's a hockey AU about Steve Rogers and Tony Stark, captains of rival hockey teams. I know I've written the same premise before, but no one's arrested me yet, so I think I'm going to get away with it this time.
- Matt Fraction's Hawkeye run left me with this idea that the superhero community knows Clint Barton owns an apartment building in New York, and recovering superheroes will sometimes hide out there while they convalesce. So here's a fic about Roy Harper, post-rehab, moving into Clint's apartment building and fixing everything.
- Time for an eerie fairy tale setting! This is for the anon who asked for Dick Grayson and Frank Castle. You only asked for one fic, but I wanted to see how it worked from Frank's POV. War, bloodletting.
- Sometimes I think about what would've happened if someone else had found Jason before Bruce Wayne did. In this particular case, it's Wolverine.
- Here's some winterhawk to close out this year. Prompts: seeing double, "you look awful."
