Work Text:

These two dolts are stolling back to the castle drunk and stumbling over each other. Merlin is a lightweight so of course he’s clinging to Gwaine for dear life and Gwaine, the poor sod, is already struggling to keep himself from falling and now he’s overwhelmed trying to keep his “friend” from falling flat on his face.
Somehow, they start to sing, who sang first is a mystery, but they sing. They warble their way through anything they could both be familiar with until they find something they actually know the words to. Their drunken stuporous walk its own dance, clung to each other for support. Faces flushed and wide smiles.

“I know I stand in line until you think you have the time to spend an evening with me,” they sloppily harmonize, Merlin moving his hand side to side as though orchestrating a choir.
“And if we go some place to dance, I know that there's a chance you won't be leaving with me,” Gwaine continues, spinning Merlin clumsily and dipping him. Merlin laughs as he sings on,
“Then afterwards we drop into a quiet little place and have a drink or two!” He sings loudly through chuckles. Gwaine pulls him in by his shoulder so their sides are pressed together and makes a show of belting the next line.
“And then I go and spoil it all by saying somethin' stupid like, ‘I love you’” The two belt out.
“I can see it in your eyes, that you despise the same old lies you heard the night before~” Merlin pushes his dance partner out and back towards himself.
“And though it's just a line to you, for me it's true…” The knight’s voice lightens and his smile melts from drunken happiness to a more pure fondness.
“And never seemed so right before,” Merlin shakes his head jovially.
“I practice every day to find some clever lines to say to make the meaning come true~” The servant bows dramatically as he waltzes backwards before his gaze returns to Gwaine’s.
“But then I think I'll wait until the evening gets late,” Merlin grins wide and gestures at the world around, “And I'm alone with you,” Gwaine pulls Merlin in and steps in time to the imaginary swell of instruments.
“The time is right, your perfume fills my head, the stars get red, and, oh, the night's so blue,” Merlin chants as he stumbles into Gwaine and clings to his shirt to keep from falling, still smiling wildly. He sways as he looks up into Gwaine’s eyes and their voices soften as they continue to their final lyric.
“And then I go and spoil it all by saying somethin' stupid like, ‘I love you’” They murmur, eyes swallowing each other.

It was a beautiful night, the air crisp but not cold, clear dark skies, stars twinkling. Oh, the stars. They shined so beautifully in Merlin's eyes as Gwaine gazed into them, blue and welcoming as ever. His smile easy and warm and so close. It was only natural with lips so close and persons so dear for the two to kiss, sweet and gentle. Eyes fluttering closed and embrace tightening ever so slightly. Gwaine sighed against Merlin's mouth, he should have taken Merlin out long ago if this was what awaited him. The servant grinned and wrapped his arms around Gwaine's waist, breaking their kiss for only a moment to sing again,
"I love you~" he murmurs, kissing down the knight's neck gently.
"I love you..." Gwaine hums.
