Tsushima Tsuuji, or more popularly known as Dazai Osamu in the streaming community, has an open secret among his fans (whom he affectionately named losers due to their so-called “grassless behavior” and “weird obsession with him”). He had no plans to reveal anything personal to his fans, especially about his love life (or the lack thereof), but he did not expect that he would attract “love experts” and “matchmakers” to his silly streams that arguably test the limits of his keyboard and mouse instead of his actual gaming skills. This would not have been a problem if they did not insist that he is in love with his roommate and ripped him out of his denial stage—he is in love with Chibi and it fucking sucks, okay? He does not want to accept that the reason why he smiles out of nowhere or feels like his heart is about to explode is his brute of a roommate who has the ugliest taste in hats. That’s just disgusting!
And now, he is suffering through the consequences of rekindling his dead relationship with his childhood friend–falling in love with him despite his adamance that Chibi is not his type. He argues that he likes all types of people except whatever his roommate is because he has good taste in men. Unfortunately, his fans can see right through his bullshit and tsundere behavior, which he insists he does not have, but the clips would prove otherwise.
The bullying he previously received from his chat due to his emotional constipation made him realize that he kind of wants to kiss his roommate under the rain or take him as his plus one for his friend’s wedding. Of course, he would never admit that out loud. No sane streamer would knowingly provide his chat fanfiction ideas and give them the satisfaction of teasing him. Despite this, he could not escape the fact that he and Chibi are just ticking every box for the gayest fanfiction troupes starting from their obvious (often one-sided) rivalry to their roommate status, which the fans eat up the most.
Besides, there is nothing he could do after he was forced to admit that yes, he has unexplainable homoerotic feelings towards his roommate slash childhood best friend slash rival slash future malewife. The only saving grace he has right now is Chibi’s lack of social media presence because he is not ready to have a mushy conversation about love with the bane of existence (or in other words, the love of his life).
“The A in Ace stands for ace and the c stands for carry,” the system reads after someone donated 1,000 yen to him. Dazai gasps dramatically in offense–how dare they give Ace such high praise in this stupid FPS game when he is obviously performing better than him. He should also receive additional points for his handsome looks, which may or may not be the reason for bagging the Rising Star Award last year.
“What do you mean? Ace is bad at this game,” he argued before his character got one-tapped by the enemy Reyna one minute into the round. He turns his attention to his chat as if challenging them to say anything, and of course, are they even the losers if they do not accept this challenge to insult Dazai’s nonexistent FPS skill in Valorant?

“Hey! You guys make it sound like I’m that bad.” It did not take long before the chat was flooded with a resounding yes. His chat then proceeds to remind him of his KDA score and compare it to Ace who ends up becoming the MVP for their concluded match. In his defense, he just recently picked up the game due to the insistence of Ace and Fedya whom he collaborates with now and then to include some variety in his content. “Next time I’ll make you eat your words.”

“Chibi, chat is being mean to me again,” Dazai complains out loud while glaring at the screen. He is never trying out any games that earned the approval of both Ace and Fedya–only insane people would continue playing that game, especially after hearing Ace curse up a storm during his rank games. When he does not hear a response, he turns around in the direction of his door and shouts, “Tell them I don't deserve it.”
“You deserve it!” A voice responded after a few seconds, making Dazai pout because of how mean his Chibi is when he should choose his side instead of the chat.
His viewers have never seen the man behind the affectionate nickname Chibi except for a few glimpses that had the chat foaming in their mouths and Dazai complaining about his roommate trying to steal his fans. They have heard his deep voice from several streams where they had to do stupid challenges (or sorry excuses for Dazai to shamelessly flirt with Chibi). He is also clear about the set boundaries that he hopes the fans would respect especially now that he is growing his platform—no, I will not reveal Chibi’s identity including his real name and appearance.

Dazai should not be held accountable for the malfunctions his central nervous system is experiencing after witnessing the fatal sight of Chuuya in a cute pink apron at 7 in the morning. It is too early to think about his potentially unrequited love towards his best friend when stayed up all night reading a Twitter AU about him and Chuuya falling in love and growing old together (which he could only wish for in this universe because he does not think he could bare the thought of losing his new found home that happens to be in the replica of Chuuya).
“Morning, shitty Dazai,” Chuuya greets him before asking him to help in setting up the table despite his unnecessary commentaries and repeatedly calling the other his wife—Chuuya would be the perfect wife if only he stops nagging. Unfortunately for Dazai’s amusement, his roommate might have already developed immunity towards his teasing (or failed attempts at flirting). Maybe it is time to start a different approach. “Stop scheming and start eating, bastard.”
“Why do you always think I am scheming something?” Dazai asks, eyes roaming around the table in silent appreciation for his roommate's delicious cooking. He would be eating cup noodles right now if Chuuya had not offered the spare room in his apartment when they met at a bar four years after he cut off his communication with his childhood friend.
Second chances are not for Dazai but Chuuya does not believe in that. Chuuya lets him back into his life with questions asked. Not even screams of anger or any signs of hostility as a result of his past betrayal. He should not be here listening to his roommate’s troubles in his law firm while enjoying a hot plate of curry. He should be wasting in his family home—a slave to the desire of his parents to create the perfect heir for their beloved company.
“You have this look in your eyes that screams trouble,” Chuuya answers as he passes Dazai a small plate of his favorite crab sticks in silent thanks to the latter for picking him up from his office yesterday due to the rain. “The last time you had that look, you almost made Atsushi cry.”
“Is this Chibi admitting that he is checking me out?”
“Ha?! How did you even come to that conclusion, bastard?” His roommate sighs in exasperation before flicking him on the forehead in retaliation. And of course, Dazai starts whining about how mean Chuuya is and that he only keeps him around to bully him for his entertainment. “You’re so annoying.”
“You tolerate me anyway,” Dazai argues back and digs into his meal, oblivious to the truth behind his words. When he does not receive any response, he looks up to see Chuuya smiling softly at him before wiping the look off his face as soon as he realizes that Dazai’s eyes are on him. He notices how flustered his roommate is, but makes no comment about it, too busy basking in the moment.
“I tolerate you too, you know.”
(And if Dazai spends an hour of his stream talking about this to his audience—emphasizing how cool he was during the exchange, but Chuuya does not need to know about that. Besides, he is not the one asking Siri if he is dying because of how fast his heart has been beating lately around his roommate.)

“Okay, losers. As you have all requested, we are having a Q&A segment today to celebrate our 100,000 followers milestone,” Dazai cheers as he opens a randomizer on his screen to help him choose the questions to answer from the list provided by his moderators. They made sure that the list only contained approved questions based on the rules provided to them by the streamer. “I don’t know how to make this entertaining for everyone, but I will try my best to answer each question.”

“Let’s start, yeah?” He plays soft music in the background to set the mood and makes sure everything is working correctly before hitting play on the randomizer to get his first question. “Maybe I’ll answer around 10 to 15 questions and then, I’ll stream League after.”
Question No. 1: What inspired you to become a streamer?
“Oh?” Dazai asks in surprise before taking a moment to think about an answer because he has never thought of the reason behind his streaming career despite being committed to this for a month already. “Honestly, I don’t think anything inspired me to do this. I only did this to maybe earn extra money while playing games with my friends. Besides, I didn’t think I would even reach 100,000 subscribers.”
Dazai proceeds to answer the questions the best way that he can–the truth mixed with obvious lies covered with self-deprecating humor that his audience tends to call him out for. Hey, he has been working on it, okay? He just finds it difficult sometimes, especially on days when his scars throb from his past failures (and when Chuuya’s laughter is a reminder of what he could have lost).
It takes about half of the questions before the weird questions start popping in despite his previous warnings. Although he might have missed certain points and now faces the consequences of not double—checking it with his roommate for a second opinion.
In his defense, he does not want to bother his dearest attorney that day when he knows that Chuuya has been having sleepless nights due to his current case.
Question No. 7: Are you dating anyone?
“Huh? I thought I had this kind of question removed,” Dazai groaned before waiting for his moderators’ response that no, this question was not included in the non-negotiables and yes, it was his fault for missing it out. He honestly does not want to make anyone on the internet think that they have a chance when Dazai is perfectly happy with being single (except at 2 in the morning when he wishes he was cuddling with someone on his bed while they tell each other about their days). “Might as well answer it since it’s already here.”
He can feel the anticipation in the chat, making him laugh at the absurdity of the situation. What is so interesting about my love life anyway? He is not looking for a relationship right now, especially when he is already content with what have right now.
After all, all he wanted was a place to call home. And he finally found it after years of searching.
“No, I’m not dating anyone.”
“Do you wish you were?” The system reads the question followed by a 5,000 yen donation from one of his audience. He honestly wants to just ignore the question, but the donation amount makes him feel guilty about it. Thank you, depresso, but why do you have to make me suffer?
“Maybe? Who knows?” Dazai chuckles, hoping that he would sound at least nonchalant about it because fuck feelings—he does not want to think about it and possibly ruin his life. Not that he is in love with someone! “My roommate would probably scare them off anyway. He and Ace would get along well with their potty mouths.”

“Me and Chibi?” Dazai gags in disgust as he reads through the chat with varying degrees of horror because we are not domestic and we hate each other. “Your obsession with fanfics is eating your brain. Touch some grass!”
On that day, Dazai’s audience learns about the existence of his “ugly and mean” roommate who is essentially his wife despite his insistence that the term is an insult towards Chibi. However, no matter how much he tries to hide it, his fans can hear the fondness behind each remark that falls off his lips. His fans are pretty much convinced that he has latent homosexual feelings towards Chibi despite his extreme denial.
(And that is the story of how the ATWR (And They Were Roommates) fan club was founded, which aims to help Dazai get a date with his dear Chibi.)

Dazai is not afraid of anything. Not until he remembers the existence of Chuuya’s best friend, Akutagawa Ryuunosuke. Don't get him wrong. He is not afraid of Akutagawa himself, but the sheer power he has in destroying his confidence about his relationship with his roommate.
Back then, Akutagawa used to follow him like a lost puppy searching for his owner during high school, but now he has become Chuuya’s overprotective dog that can send him limping straight to the emergency room with his black belt in judo. Despite his sickly nature before, his junior can pack a nasty kick that would send him flying to a wall. He doesn’t want to experience that. Ever!
Imagine his surprise when he checks the intercom and sees Akutagawa standing behind his apartment. The dread he feels when he sees the man glare at the camera would make his fans question his sanity because no one would look at the other and think he can take on someone with Dazai’s physique. Jokes on them, I cannot even stop Akutagawa from pushing his way into my door. He needs Chuuya to come home this instant. Please!
“Ah, no wonder Chuu-san doesn’t want me to come here,” Akutagawa said amusedly while taking off his shoes. Dazai looks at him dumbfounded as the other just saunters into his apartment as if he owns it. Maybe he could excuse his behavior due to his status as Chuuya’s best friend (which was his title before), but can he not look like he is about to murder me?!
“How are you, Dazai-san?” Akutagawa asks he takes a sit on the sofa as Dazai offers him a cup of tea before taking a seat next to him. “I heard that you’re taking on an extra job.”
“Just streaming games,” he replies awkwardly and busies himself with the book lying carelessly on the coffee table in front of him. He needs to be distracted enough to survive this conversation before he spontaneously combusts on the spot because this situation is so awkward. “Nothing interesting.”
As soon as those words left his mouth, the atmosphere around Akutagawa suddenly changed–he looked amused while he took a sip of his tea as if he knew something the older did not. “Are you sure? Two weeks ago, you finally realized your feelings towards Chuu-san and—”
“Wait. How do you know that?”
“Rashoumon enjoys your streams very much.”
“You’re that Rashoumon?!” Dazai exclaims in disbelief. This fucking bitch always insults his skills in Valorant, calling his losses a “skill issue,” which is understandable, but he did not have to point it out every time. It hurt his ego, okay? Although it did help him improve significantly lately because he wants to prove this asshole wrong. “I can’t believe I was having beef with you!”
“Your gay panics over my best friend were very entertaining.”
“Please stop talking.”
Dazai thinks Akutagawa’s real purpose for coming here is not to talk to Chuuya, but rather to torment the shit out of him while using his words against him. Please, come home already, Hatrack! Is this his payback for abandoning him back in high school? He is already trying to redeem himself after rekindling his friendship with Chuuya. Have some mercy!
“Dazai-san, I know your feelings for Chuu-san are genuine,” the younger brings up after a good laugh about Dazai’s Valorant failures and his struggles in working under Fukuzawa’s company as their software engineer–he would have quit his job if it were not for the good coffee in their floor. “But if you hurt him again—”
“I’m at your mercy.”
Akutagawa looks him in the eyes, searching for any hint of lies in his words and trying to decipher the unspoken words that the other could not say at loud. And when he thinks he has seen enough, he sighs in contentment and gives Dazai a pat on the shoulder—a sign of acceptance that the older thinks he does not deserve.
“At first, I didn’t think you deserved a second chance, but you proved me wrong,” Akutagawa chuckles before standing up to greet Chuuya as he hears the door open. “Please continue to prove me wrong, Dazai-san.”

“Do not clip it!” Dazai screams as his chat goes insane after Chuuya accidentally shows his hand during the stream. He decides to do a cooking stream for his audience with the guidance of his roommate. However, he did not consider that Chuuya would become exasperated to the point of revealing his hands to thousands of people because he should not be left in the kitchen unsupervised. Fortunately, he chose to do a hand perspective on this stream or everyone would have been cursed with his roommate’s ugly face. “I’ll report your accounts if I see any clips of this.”

Dazai continues the disastrous cooking show without any problem after the entire knife fiasco, but Chuuya sometimes makes comments about his methods and suggests extra ingredients to add to the meal to ensure that it would be tastier. In the end, the stream ends up becoming a success despite the hand incident. They also share the meal in front of the camera while ensuring that Chuuya is out of the frame for his privacy.

Dazai may have the most brilliant plan right now–no thanks to his fans who only think that he should be honest about his feelings and just ask Chuuya out on a date. Confessing his feelings is so lame. Why go through all the trouble of confessing when they can just play a game using the new heart monitor he just purchased? Fedya thinks it is a stupid plan but at least he is trying unlike him who is hopelessly pining for this streamer named Kolya (a League player which means he is automatically a failure in his book).
“Chibi is here with me to do a heart monitor challenge using little bad boys here,” he introduces the theme of the stream today while showing the heart monitors to the chat and making sure that Chuuya is out of the frame. “We will try our best to… How do I explain this without making it sound weird? Make each other’s heart race?”

“Okay, I am gonna strap these to us and then, we’ll have 5 minutes each to increase the BPM or beats per minute of the other,” Dazai explains as he helps his roommate strap it on his wrist before moving back to his seat in front of the camera. “Whoever has the highest BPM loses.”
“How many rounds are we doing this?”
“Maybe around three should be okay?”
In the long run, Dazai should have known that this was a bad idea because he was completely failing at calming his heart every time Chuuya looked just a second longer at him or said the lamest pickup line he had ever heard. At least it is obvious that he is not the only one affected based on the other’s BPM. Sometimes he wonders how some of his lines even worked against Chuuya since it is very likely that his admirers have used it before in their useless attempt to take Chuuya out on a date.
(A hopeful part of him thinks that hey, maybe I have a chance with Chuuya, but he does not want to risk whatever they have right now. Besides, this is just a silly game—maybe Chuuya is just embarrassed about his antics. Nothing more, nothing less.)

And he never had the urge to kiss him until that moment and maybe if he were deserving enough, Chuuya would think about him too. Ah, he realizes in between the twinkle of Chuuya’s mismatched eyes and the symphony of his voice, I’m really in love with him.

And his heart soars and hopes that is true.

Insomnia is a fucking bitch.
His nightmares would sometimes result in sleepless nights, but the fact that he could not even get a second of sleep due to his insomnia was far worse than anything, especially when he stayed up all night trying to fix the codes for a software Fukuzawa assigned to him. He blames it on the three cups of coffee he had to chug down to finish it before the deadline or Odasaku would scold him for procrastinating his work again–which he ended up doing, but he does not need to know that!
Dazai is not surprised when he spots Chuuya in the kitchen stress—baking at 1 in the morning. He knows that sometimes the cases his roommate handles can be quite disturbing and he has chosen baking as some sort of coping mechanism to take his mind off them even only for a few hours.
“Hey, Hatrack. Are you okay?” Dazai asks as he sits on a stool near the counter to watch the other shape the dough into gingerbread cookies with a soft smile on his face. Maybe his fans are right about the two of them, they do sometimes look like old married couples who lived at a cottage near the forest.
“Yeah, just had a hard case today,” Chuuya answers before placing the cookies into the open and sitting on the empty stool next to Dazai. “Having trouble falling asleep again?”
“I drank too much coffee.”
Chuuya chuckles and holds Dazai’s hand in comfort while humming to the tune of a song he heard on the radio yesterday. He feels his heart stutter as he remembers the lyrics of the song, watching his roommate close his eyes as if Chuuya is having a private moment despite the feeling of Dazai’s hand on his own.
“I still wanna be your favorite boy. I wanna be the one that makes your day,” Dazai sings while he watches Chuuya’s lips morph into a smile. He squeezes his hand, maybe in comfort or anxiety. He does not know. But at that moment, he wants to say his three forbidden words. Scream it out loud and just say fuck you to the consequences. “The one you think about as you lie awake.”
“Huh? I didn’t expect you to know this song.”
Dazai just shrugs in response as he continues singing the next lines. He pulls Chuuya up to stand before moving his hand up and twirling him, which earns him a laugh and a smack on the chest. His heart is about to burst out of his chest, but he ignores it in favor of taking in the sight of Chuuya under the kitchen lights, smiling at him as if he is the embodiment of happiness at that moment. God, if Chuuya is not for me, then why the fuck not?
“And I can’t wait to be your number, your number one.” He softly smiles back at his roommate as they sway around the kitchen while the smell of gingerbread cookies slowly surrounds the kitchen. When the next line came, he could not help but look Chuuya in the eye–hoping that he could understand the words he did not dare to say. “I’ll be your biggest fan and you’ll be mine.”
He wants to say it. He really does. But he is so fucking scared.
“But I still want to break your heart and make you cry.”

Dazai is a firm believer that confessions should not be over the top because they all rely on the sincerity of the delivery. It is the thought that counts! But that does not mean there is no need for any preparations—any person should know that confessing is a difficult agenda since he has to talk about his feelings. Why can’t Chuuya confess instead? Assuming that he likes me back, of course.
After the romantic kitchen dancing two weeks ago, he has finally been “brainwashed” enough by his chat to confess his undying feelings for his roommate. Despite his worries, they have all reassured him that no, Chibi will not kick him out of their apartment, and yes, Chibi is likely to be in love with him too. Even Rashoumon seems to agree with them too, which boosts his confidence a bit–he will never willingly admit that to Akutagawa though.
Right now he has not formulated a single plan for his confession, especially with how busy he is with the new clients in the company. He is pretty sure that Fukuzawa is just sending everyone to him at this point despite his protest. Give me a break! But maybe he can ask for a week’s leave next month to prepare for his life—changing moment because he is sure that this will end up with him making out with Chuuya or hunting for a new apartment. And it is obvious which one he would prefer.
“Why do they only have the courage to confess when they are drunk?” Chuuya asks, shaking his head as he watches the main character get rejected by his best friend and left alone on the balcony. Good fucking Lord! I hope that doesn’t happen to me. He leans into the other’s shoulder and reaches for the bowl of popcorn on his lap. “I don’t get it.”
“Liquid courage is powerful, you know,” Dazai beams while mentally noting to remove any balcony in the possible sites for his confession. Maybe this movie is giving him a sign to not confess in a balcony because they are unlucky. Just look at how devastated the girl is. He cannot handle that. He is very fragile when it comes to Chuuya!
“I think she should have just gone for it,” Chuuya argues as he takes another piece of popcorn and places it in his mouth. “No need to plan it all out. Just be direct.”
Dazai stares at his roommate for a moment, watching the reflection of the television light on his face. And before he can think about how stupid this is, he blurts out the words he wants to say for so long.
“I love you, Chuuya.”
(And when he sees the smile break out on Chuuya’s lips. He knows he did it right.)
