With their assitance she boards a ship and travels to America with nothing but a few pieces of gold in her pocket and a letter of introduction to a Dr. Jack Dawkins of the U.S. Marine Hospital of San Francisco. Will her life ever be good again? Or will she be forced to live in fear or her husband finding her across the ocean to drag her back to hell?

Canon divergence. Belle starts volunteering at the hospital without blackmailing jack first (since he’s already left town). Her mother arranges her marriage to captain gaines, who abuses het. Finally fagin (sneed’s convict servant) conspires with fanny — and by blackmailing darius — to help belle run away to america, where she is supposed to meet dr jack dawkins at the us marine hospital in san francisco. He introduces her to a baker family who allow her to board with them at a bargain and sets her up with a job at the hospital (thanks to the paperwork fagin falsified for her that say sneed certified her as a nurse). She acclimates to the job and starts saving to take the necessary college courses to become a surgical nurse. Jack appears to be ignoring her, but at the end of chapter 2 he clarifies it was unintentional, he’s been spending all his spare time in the morgue. No background pairings. No smut. M rating is accurate. Belle’s POV.
