Death Fit for a King

Chapter 6: Surprises for Everyone

Chapter Text

Three months passed, and Asta excelled in his lessons far more than anyone thought he would, even himself. If someone were to see how he’d act now, they’d think he was born a noble. He was fitted for his new clothing and asked that the cape be clasped to his vest and for it to hang in the back rather than over the shoulder like Julius’s. He also wanted to make sure it would be able to allow him fluid movements for when he needed to use his sword.

Everyone gossiped about who the lucky man was in Charlotte’s life, and Yami enjoyed every second, because no one once suspected him. Truth be told, Charlotte enjoyed the game they were playing. Their engagement would be announced before the Wizard King announcement.

“Are you ready, kid?” Yami asked as he looked at his son with pride.

“I thought I would be, but-”

“Hey.” Yami began. “This is pushing past your limits, right? You’ve reached your goal to become Wizard King. Now, show them you deserve it.”

With determination freshly etched into his face, he gave a nod and readied himself for the announcements. “Ready.”

“Excuse me! May I have everyone’s attention, please?” Julius asked, and the kingdom became a ghost town. “Once again, we have Marx and his men to thank for such a momentous occasion to be broadcast everywhere. There are three announcements I’d like to make tonight. Firstly is, to congratulate Captain Charlotte of the Blue Rose knights on her engagement. I’m sure many of you are wondering who she might accept as he betrothed. Come on out.”

Yami chuckled low. “Oh, this is gonna be funny. Even if they don’t say anything.” Yami stepped out, and everyone screamed and shouted their astonishment and shock.

“NO WAY!” Many people shouted.

Yami shrugged. “Well, I guess it can’t be helped.” Yami walked over to Charlotte, grabbed her by the waist, and tipped her face up to meet his before he pressed his lips to hers for a passionate kiss. “Yes, way. Right, My Princess?”

Many men and women could be heard swooning after that display. “Darling, I wish you would’ve waited AFTER the ceremony,” Charlotte muttered, but everyone, thanks to Marx’s magic and his helpers, heard.

“Nah. They doubted it. Now, they won’t.” He turned to Julius. “Sorry to take the stage like that, Julius.”

“It’s quite alright, Yami.” He smiled at him. “As I said, congratulations are in order.”

As everyone cheered, some of the Black Bulls below were wondering where Asta was. They were told he’d be released from being overlooked today, but they couldn’t see or hear him. They all figured he’d be happy to be let out.

“For my second announcement, the Clover King had passed away, and since he had no heirs to speak of, I shall be taking his place as the Clover King. As such, that brings me to my third announcement. My becoming Clover King means my replacement was necessary. Myself, along with all the Magic Knight Captains, have ascertained and agreed that this particular individual has surpassed us all, and many of you know him well and have come to admire him. When you see him, I am sure all of you will be shocked, but I assure you, it’s truly him.” By now, Julius had everyone, including the Black Bulls, equally confused. “I present to you your new Wizard King.” Asta walked out with pride, dignity, and grace. As soon as he appeared the crowd roared their approval.

In Hage Village the children were stunned speechless, and the priest fainted while the villagers were just as shocked as the priest was.

In Nean, everyone cheered, but no one cheered louder than Marie.

Meanwhile, the Black Bulls stared in awe and amazement. “He... He did it!” Finral laughed out.

“Marie wouldn’t have been happy with anyone else as king,” Gauche commented with a small smile.

“Holy Crap, Seriously?!” Magna, Luck, Nacht, and Zora shouted at the same time.

“Ooh! Do you think he’ll let me try the kingly food he’ll get to eat?” Charmy asked.

“Way to keep perspective, Charmy.” Vanessa sneered playfully. She then looked up at Asta and smiled. “If anyone was gonna be the Wizard King, it was going to be you, Kid. As for you, Captain Yami... I guess a girl can’t always get what she wants. I’m positive she’ll make you happy, though.”

“He’s so brave to be up there in front of everyone!” Gray said with a nervous smile.

“I am so proud of my best friend,” Gordon mumbled.

“Wait, wait, wait...” The other Black Bulls squad members turned to look at her. “...I’m dating the Wizard King?!”

It seemed to dawn on everyone at that moment, even Charmy. “Holy Crap!” They all said as they looked at her.

Up on the grand balcony, Asta began to speak. “I know it’s a surprise to everyone that I’m alive. I was a surprise to me, too. I do not carry this title lightly. I promise to not disappoint, and I swear that I will do my best as your Wizard King. I am not just THE Wizard King. I am YOUR Wizard King. We are one nation! Commoner, noble, local, foreigner, magic knights, non-magic knights, we all make up this beautiful kingdom, and I have the pleasure and honor of being your king. I would like to thank my adoptive father, Yami...”

“WHAT?!” Everyone that didn’t know screamed.

“...for encouraging me and always pushing me to push past my limits. I want to thank my former squad mates for being the best friends anyone could’ve ever hoped for. I would like to thank King Julius whom I wouldn’t be here today without him. I would also like to thank my girlfriend, Noelle Silva.”

“WHAT?!” Everyone shouted even louder than they did about Yami being his adoptive father.

Nozel smiled proudly while the other two siblings fainted just after turning pale as snow.

“Wait... let me see if I can change that... NOELLE!”

She grabbed a broom and flew up to him. “What?”

“Will you marry me?” He asked as he got down on one knee and presented her with a ring. “I have your brother’s blessing, and this ring was, according to him, your mother’s.”

“YES!”

The nation cheered, and just as the priest in Hage village had started to wake up, he heard the engagement and fainted once more, as did the rest of the village. The children were happy. Marie and Rebecca pouted in Nean Village.

“So!” Asta began. “Correction, I would like to thank my fiancée, Noelle Silva, for always having my back even when I didn’t think I needed anyone there. Lastly, I want to thank everyone in the Clover Kingdom. Each and every one of you makes the Kingdom what it is. From the Grandest of Magic Knights to the poorest commoner. Each and every one of you has a part to play in this kingdom. Thank you for all your hard work! Let’s make this the best kingdom ever!”
