Even Silence Is Violent

Summary:

The sound of the casita cracking and falling apart around her wont stop playing in Mirabel's mind

Work Text:

Its been a chaotic few days since Casita fell, the Madrigals had taken up refuge in the church those first two nights, before Señora Ozwald and señora Guzman offer their homes to the familia. Mirabel, Isabela, Luisa, Agustin, Julieta and Bruno take the two spare rooms in the Ozwalds home, the two hermamanas wanting to stay close to Mirabel as they had quickly noticed that something wasn't quite right with her, and after watching her climb up a crumbling casita in order to get the candle, it concerned them to no end.

Its not until the middle of the night that they hear soft sobs and whimpers, coming from where Mirabel is curled up on her makeshift bed in the corner "mira?" Isa whispers, shaking luisa in order to wake her up as well as she wasn't sure if she could handle this as sensitively as she or their mama could.

Luisa stirs and turns at the sound of their hermanitas disress, eyes wide with worry before the two move to kneel at either side of her. They notice that Mirabel isn't actually asleep like they thought she was, but awake and covering her ears much like Dolores did when there was too much noise "Mirabel?" Isa whispers again, concern growing as she's never seen her like this before.

Mirabel just curls up tighter in response, eyes closed hard enough that it looks like it hurts as she whispers "stop, stop. Why wont it stop?" In a  desperate loop until she's sobbing heartbrokenly. Isa's and luisa's eyes meet and the oldest of the two is rushing to get their mama and tio Bruno as they were the closest to them.

Bruno is the first to rush in, taking Luisas spot and gently placing a hand on Mira's side as Julieta comes in with a lit candle so she could see what was going on "mirabel, mariposa can you hear me?" Bruno asks softly as he rubs soothing circles on her back "why wont it stop tio Bruno?!" Is the desperate answer they receive, before the girl is throwing herself at his chest and curling into him just as desperately.

Bruno holds her protectivly as she sobs, juli slowly making her way around to try and soothe her, whilst Agustin ushers his shell shocked daughters from the room. With her eldest daughters taken care of, Julieta focuses her attention on her youngest "why would what stop querida?" She asks, looking at Bruno in confused concern as he looks just as upset as Mirabel.

Mirabel shakes her head desperately against her tio's chest, even as she whispers "the cracks, the house falling. It wont stop playing over and over" she devolves back into heart wrenching sobs all over again, causing bruno's hold to tighten around her as he whispers "you are safe, the familia is safe. It wasnt your fault, no one blames you i promise" reassuring his mariposa, whilst Julieta gently pulls Mirabel away from his chest so she can look at her properly.

This causes two sets of complaints, but when she looks her hija over, she finally discovers whats wrong "ay cariña, the shock has finally set in" she says gently, brushing a few tears away "you havn't let yourself rest or think about what happend until now and its all crashing over you now" she continues, watching as realisation grows in Brunos eyes whilst some of the fear and pain melts from Mirabel's as understanding overtakes them.

The reasurance from both her mama and tio seems to calm her further, as she settles against Bruno's chest and falls asleep to his heartbeat, something that makes him slightly emotional as he never thought he'd have this again. Julieta stays until its clear hes not moving from his spot against the wall. Something he'll regret come morning, but its more than worth it if it brings Mirabel the comfort she needs from the silence of night.

The familia finds them curled up fast asleep together the next morning, Bruno's head resting on a softly smiling Mirabel's. Its not the first time the sound of cracks and the house falling around her haunts Mirabel wherever it gets too quiet, but she knows her familia is there to help her when it gets too quiet or too much.
