Chapter Text
Obi-Wan Kenobi Was average in every class he was in. He just didn’t seem to excel at anything. That is until kyber 101.
Kyber 101 was the first class about lightsaber construction. As the class filled in Obi-Wan passed Brucks bench heading to the back table.
“I bet Oafy-Wan will fail with this as well" the older boy said. Bruck must of said it to loud because Master Lez heard him. “Bruck that was uncalled for. You’ll be receiving a demerit and I’ll be talking to your crechemaster.” The teacher chastised. Bruck turned red, not in shame but in anger. The Master must of felt it because he frowned.
Obi-Wan sat at his desk at the back of the class hoping he couldn’t fail this class he already had to take remedial classes he really didn’t want to fail another.
“Welcome to Kyber 101 I’m Master Lez and I’m the Kyber Master of the temple. First I’ll be teaching you how to feel the crystals then in later classes the basics of lightsaber construction, then we will build training sabers. You’ll then move on to advance classes before you go to Illium then when you return we will construct your first true lightsaber. It used to be you built your saber on the return trip. But the crucible was attacked and Professor Hyung was lost to us. Over four thousand years of lightsaber construction lost to pirates. But first you must learn to listen to the crystals.
Infront of you is a box inside is an assortment of crystals. Listen to each crystal write what you think needs to be written about it. Raise your hand after your finished and I’ll come talk to you about your findings. This is an individual task. Each kyber is different so you can’t copy off a friend. I leave you no instructions as this is to fell out where everyone’s natural skill levels are at.
Now get to it.”
Obi-Wan opened his box and was assaulted by a cacophony of sounds. He quickly took each kyber out and separated them on the bench.
Obi-Wan then went and sorted the kyber with what felt right in the force and with what the kyber were telling him. Master Lez didn’t say to but it felt right. He then went through each kyber slowly sinking in to a meditation with each kyber and writing down what he felt. After about half an hour he noticed he was one of the last ones to finish. Obi-Wan frowned. Was he doing it wrong being so slow. It didn’t matter he had just finished so he raised his hand.
Master Lez came up to his table and looked down at his assortment of kyber. There was a little bit of shock that was quickly squashed.
“Can you run me through your crystals initiate Keobi"
“Yes Master. These first ones have flaws in them and would likely not work at all or worse explode if put in a lightsaber. The next three need to retire they’ve done their part and now need to rest. The next one also needs to retire but needs someone to mediate with it, it’s angry and needs to heal. The next two are twins and either need to be put in to Single crystal jai'kai blades or in to a multi crystal sabre. And the next four are perfectly fit for duty and are just waiting for their time. The last one is a puzzle it seems perfectly fine but when I meditated with it I got nothing so I think its waiting to be found.”
Obi-Wan had grown more confident as he talked but when he stopped Bruck was sniggering. What Obi-Wan didn’t know was that the rest of the class had said things along the lines of I got nothing or brief description of happy or sad.
Master Laz looked at Obi-Wan with a keen eye
“Very well done Obi-Wan.” The master said but before he could say anything else another student raised their hand.
As the class was leaving Obi-Wa passed Master Laz's desk. “Obi-Wan can I talk to you please?” He asks causing Bruck to snigger but quickly leave under the watchful eye of Master Laz.
“Obi-Wan your not in trouble, what you did today was remarkable not even trained knights could do what you do. You have a gift for kyber. Tell me what you heard or saw?”
“when I opened the box it was a cacophony of sound, they didn’t like being sorted like that so I listened to each of their songs and ordered them. I then meditated with each of them. Some of them was just raw emotions but others sung with a purpose.”
Master laz took his lightsaber off his belt and floated it infront of him and slowly Disassembled the casing revealing the yellow kyber inside.
“Take my Kyber and tell me what you hear and see"
Obi-Wan nervously took the kyber in his hand then cradled it to his chest and fell in to a meditation.
“I feel warmth and Joy, you meditate with it regularly it feels a lot like you do in the force. There’s sorrow as well from loss, it’s tired but is willing to take up arms again if need be.”
“You felt the sorrow of when i lost my first padawan to cancer. I want to move you up a class to kyber 201. You already know how to feel the kyber. Now you need to learn about harmonics and power regulations. I’ll inform your crechemaster of the change. Let me pull up your schedule and see what class I can put you in.”
Obi-Wan was shocked everything was moving to fast. Obi-Wan didn’t know how to feel being good at something he was always so average.
“Ah you’ll have to swap your free period but there’s a 201 starting next week. Are you happy to swap your free period and move to 201 or would you prefer to stay in 101. I understand if you want to stay in 101 with your friends but you’ll be entirely bored. The first semester is all about trying to get the class to read the kyber even a little. So that they don’t blow up a saber with a cracked or faulty crystal.”
Obi-Wan thought for a moment , he would miss his friends but this was the first thing he was good at and he wouldn’t be in the same class as Bruck.
“I’m happy to move to saber 201 Master Lez thank you.”
“Wonderful my apprentice knight Valen takes 201 though I’m there to assist. He calls me a mother tooka. But I just like to teach.” Master Lez says with a smile. Quickly sending a message off to Obi-Wans crechemaster
“Now off with you, I’m sure your friends are wondering where you are.”
