Chapter Text
Before she knew it, Hailey had arrived in Chicago and was headed to Med and Jay. When they got there, she was greeted by Maggie before taken upstairs to her new room.
The blonde had been in her room for a while until Maggie came in with Jay on a wheelchair, “Sounds like you’ve got a visitor Hails.”
”How in the world did you cooperate to a wheelchair?”
”Deal was no wheelchair, no visit.” Hailey laughed it off and the head nurse left the room before they got to the serious conversation they knew they both needed to have. “You scared the hell out of me when Platt told me you’d been intubated.”
“I’m okay, a little pneumonia won’t kick me down. I’m way too stubborn. You doing good?”
”I don’t know. Will looked like he wanted to kill my dad the second he saw him.”
”You can’t blame him, your dad did a real messed up thing. But he’s in federal custody and going nowhere.”
”But the ghost of him?” She knew what happened had triggered his PTSD.
”And we’ll get through it together. Your dad was pretty dumb to assume we weren’t on good terms, we got this.”
“Uh, could we just not call him my dad and by his real name. He’s my blood but sure as hell not family.”
”Of course, i’m here for you. We’re going to be okay.” Reaching out with her IV free hand, Jay accepting. ”Can’t believe Sampson was in on it, I thought I could trust him in Bolivia.”
”He’s got hell to pay, with the military and the courts. He’s done.” At that moment they were interrupted by Agent North. “Hey guys, sorry to interrupt but I got some news.”
”Come in.”
”Just got back from federal court, Halstead and Sampson took the deal of a life sentence with no ability of parole so there won’t be a trial. Finally listened to their lawyers.”
”Thank you so much, that’s amazing.”
”No problem, I’ll leave you guys to it,” exiting the room and Will walked in a few minutes later. “How you guys doing?”
”Okay, better knowing there won’t a trial, those dumbasses doing something good for once.”
”Guys just do me a favour, please don’t be stubborn and bottle up your feelings. It’s fine for you to be struggling with what happened.” Will knew that his brother and sister-in-law weren’t the ones to look for help with their troubles.
”Mom would’ve been so pissed at him,” a little smirk escaping from Jay at the thought.
“If she found out, she would’ve gave him an earful.”
”I bet she’s taunting him in his prison cell from her grave, what he gets after all.” They fell into a comfortable silence before Jay had to be taken back to his room leaving Will and Hailey together.
”Was your dad always that religious?”
”Yeah, our mom was as well but after she died we kind of drifted off. But never was I suspecting him to do anything like this.”
”I’m worried about him Will, he was doing well before this.”
”I am, but I’m also worried about you. You both went through something traumatic at the hands of family, that’s some baggage you got to heal from.”
At that moment, the team entered the room bearing food. “We thought you could use some comforts.” For the next few hours, the team talked about the case and other things until visiting time was over.
3 days later, Hailey got discharged from Med and Jay had a date set for the beginning of next week. “You know you should go home.”
”And leave my stubborn ex in the hospital all by himself?”
”Will is here, I got no chance of breaking out early. I think we both know that. And funny you mentioned ex.”
”Huh?”
”You still have no idea what I was planning to do before everything kind of went to hell.”
”Don’t leave me hanging Jay Halstead.”
”Fancy a trip to the riverwalk in 2 weeks time?”
“Well thanks to the forced medical leave from Platt, I don’t really have a choice. Do I?” A smile returned to Hailey’s face that she hadn’t had since the night that she finally got to call him hers.
And no family wouldn’t stand a chance of ruining what was meant to be, forever.
