Chapter 2: The Fear of Being Seen

Summary:

Cassian feels guilty impersonating Gangu out of fear of being caught and ruining his relationship with his sister.

Notes:

Hello everyone, yes, I'm alive. Unfortunately, the fan fic writer curse caught up to me, and I was involved in a pretty bad car crash, and my mom was diagnosed with cancer. However, I'm finally back with another chapter (yay!), this time from Cassian's perspective. I'll be uploading more frequently from now on.

(See the end of the chapter for more notes.)

Chapter Text

Cassian’s perspective:

After being reincarnated in Gangu’s body and finding out what had happened by talking to Moros, Cassian dealt with Gangu’s bullies and went back home.

Although he had Gangu’s memories, he couldn’t help but feel weird about remembering things he never experienced. It was disorienting, to say the least.

One moment, he and Jeff are being betrayed by Lampas, and he gets sniped, falling into a large body of water, whereas the other, he wakes up in a completely random body of a high school boy, who also coincidentally ‘drowned’ like him — except he had drowned with his face in the toilet. Yet worst of all, that’s not even the most ironic thing. He just happened to be a psyker who had to wake up in the body of a villain of all things. It’s almost laughable, how the world has seemed to be against him so far, as if it was mocking him.

Although the transition from being a psyker to being a villain was hard, Cassian was able to adapt quickly with the help of Moros, though he couldn’t help but doubt the strange spirit, as it seemed to be hiding a lot. As Cassian went back to his  Gangu’s home, he quickly shut himself in his room, not knowing how to face Yuri, Gangu’s older sister.

Despite remembering Yuri from Gangu’s memories, Cassian felt weird pretending to be someone he wasn’t — he didn’t want Yuri to realize her younger brother was acting off. Instead, he decided to avoid Yuri, and instead spent the night planning a way to train the next morning in order to get acclimated to his new powers as a villain. He had to if he wanted to get revenge on Lampas for what they did to Jeff.

The next morning, Cassian decided to get up early in hopes of leaving the house before Yuri got up, but his plan goes down the drain as he almost drops a pan in the kitchen after being startled by Moros, making a loud noise.

For a few seconds, he thinks he’s in the clear because he hears no noise from Yuri’s room. This, however, is not the case because just a second after Cassian let a sigh out of relief, Yuri got up from her bed and quickly went to the kitchen, catching him off guard with a ‘good morning.’

Cassian just stands there in the kitchen, bewildered, before realizing that he has to reply not as Cassian, but as Gangu. As he recomposes himself, trying his best to ignore Moro’s amused gaze, he manages to utter a ‘good morning’ back, but panicked because Yuri looked at him in suspicion.

He didn’t realize that he failed to take Gangu’s disdain for mornings into account until Yuri asked why he was up so early. Trying to deflect, he quickly told her a general answer, like ‘I felt like it’, but inwardly, he was worried that he was already giving himself away. To make things better, Moros kept making sarcastic comments like, ‘real smooth,’ instead of helping him with his situation. He knew how Gangu acted around his sister, but he wasn’t confident about imitating Gangu, a shy child, the opposite of his assertive self.

Before he was able to escape, Yuri quickly told him to wait before leaving for her room. Cassian contemplated taking that as an opportunity to avoid Yuri and leave the house, but thought better of it since it’d cause more problems in the long-run. Instead, he stayed there like Yuri asked him to, a bit worried about why she wanted him to stay there.

As he was stuck in his mind, devising a plan on how to leave without seeming weird so that he could train, Yuri returned with his allowance.

Cassian stared at her in confusion, wondering why she was giving it to him in advance, before remembering that Gangu was being bullied and had lost all his money as a result. Feeling Yuri’s concerned gaze after asking, “You asked for your allowance ahead of time, didn’t you?” Cassian decided to avoid the question, and instead thank her quickly, before leaving to avoid further questioning.

Although Cassian felt bad for leaving Yuri abruptly like that, he knew that he would cause more harm than good if he stayed there, talking to her longer.

After leaving the house and making sure that Yuri didn’t follow him, Cassian quickly went to an abandoned alley, eager to try his new powers out. While he was still hesitant about using his powers as a villain, his desire to avenge Jeff drove him to accept his situation, even if he didn’t want to.

Yes, he loathed villains, especially after being a psyker who dealt with many ruthless ones, but most of all, he loathed Lampas, especially the corrupt members who went after innocent people for their own gain. Keeping the situation with Jeff fresh on his mind, he focused on getting stronger, ignoring that he became one of the things he hated the most.

As Cassian tried to use his powers as a villain again, he found that he couldn’t even transform. After struggling for a bit, he finally decided to glance at Moros, before asking for help. “Hey, why can’t I transform like last time?”

“Because villains are driven by emotions… and it seems like for you, it is anger.” Moros finally supplies, after staring at Cassian in indifference for a couple of seconds.

“Anger, huh? That should be easy…” Cassian says to himself, as he forces himself to think about Lampas betraying him and Jeff in an attempt to get angry.

After a few minutes of Cassian being lost in thought about Lampas, he suddenly broke the silence by screaming at the top of his lungs, “LAMPAS YOU SONS OF BITCHES! I’M GONNA KILL YOU ALL!”

“What are you doing?” Moros asks in confusion, not understanding why Cassian was screaming so loudly.

“Getting angry,” Cassian replied easily, as if it was the most obvious thing in the world. After a few moments of processing Cassian’s words, Moros stares at him in disbelief, wondering what led Jeff to choose Cassian, of all people, for him to be stuck with.

“You don’t have to yell. Just think of stuff in your head.” Moros tells Cassian, feeling annoyed by all the noise.

Cassian, in embarrassment, mutters, “why didn’t you tell me that?!” before quickly becoming quiet and transforming into his villain form, making his attribute window pop up.

After Moros helped Cassian understand how his attribute window works and how his powers as a villain works, he decided to go back home out of guilt. Although Moros asked him if he was guilty, he quickly deflected, saying it was because Gangu died in his place. In reality, however, he didn’t want to ruin what Gangu had with his sister, especially since he had cared deeply for her, and Cassian knew what it was like to care about someone. In his eyes, Yuri is what Jeff was for him: family.

As he was walking home, however, a loud explosion interrupted his thoughts, coming from a nearby building. Turning towards the sound, he saw a mob of people running towards him in fear, away from the building on fire. Cassian’s eyes widened in surprise as everyone started screaming that a villain had blown up the building and had taken hostages — a mother and her child.

Quickly scrapping his plan of getting back home early, Cassian rushed to the building, not being able to ignore the fact that the hostages were at risk. Meanwhile, Yuri was at home, waiting for her brother Gangu to return home, worried about his sudden distanced behavior — unaware of the fact that he was heading into a dangerous situation.

Notes:

The next chapters will be from Yuri's perspective again, although the story might start deviating from what's canon.
