    Summary

It takes a lot, to gut a man. It takes a lot less to do a kid.

That's the kind of thing you think about now, when you're packing orders for the dump: the wet stickiness of peeled skin, the gentle glide of the knife – strange sense-memories spattered across the canvas of your life, searing like the aftermath of vomit. It’s bled into you rather than out, and you’re not sure how to handle it. If your world was ever made to handle it.

Sometimes, it seems like it wasn’t made to handle much at all.

Somewhere in the bowels of the Pizzaplex, a security guard looks into the abyss for something to salvage — and finds her own reflection looking back. What follows are her (reluctant) musings on bodies, knives, and the things between them.

(Vanessa-centric character study, originally written for VanWeek2024's Day 2 prompt, "knife"... but spiralled out from there. Reader discretion is advised.)
