It was already 9:00 p.m. when Michael, who usually came home much earlier, made his entrance. Something in his attitude was different. He ignored Dad, who was in the living room, and headed straight for him and Elizabeth.
Evan's surprise was total when his brother, with an expression that was halfway between despair and tenderness, hugged them both. It wasn't the kind of gesture she would expect from him, much less after having seen him tease her with that unpleasant mask.
From the corner of the room, William, the boys' father, watched the scene with a mixture of surprise and confusion.
