'til we both see the light

Summary:

Wind is very curious about the ghost. Whose ghost is it? How does it seem to exist in every Hyrule? Why are Time and Warriors being so avoidant? And, most of all, why does the crankiest member of the chain have to be so darn observant? Wind just wants to be a ghosty boi in peace.

Notes:

WELL this is my first fanfic ever so we'll see how it goes. I don't see Wind-centric fics enough, also Phantom Hourglass is one of the best zelda games and I will stand by that (I just finished, the ending is lowkey hilarious).

Chapter 1: You will hide from everyone

Chapter Text

Wind frowned as it flittered between the sleeping forms of the chain. First it hovered over Time, and a strange sense of mourning seemed to come over its figure. Then it moved slowly over to Legend, hovering over him protectively. Legend stirred slightly and grimaced in his sleep. It quickly moved away after that, flitting over to Hyrule, where it finally seemed to rest.

Wind touched his phantom sword, unsure. Was this spirit a threat? He didn’t know. He had seen it hovering near the group every night, but it had never approached closer. It had never moved as close as this.

The spirit slowly reached out its arm towards Hyrule and Wind tensed. He didn’t want to cause a fuss if he didn’t have to, the group had looked exhausted after their day-long trek into a cave, promised the comfort of safety and rest. But the spirit only stroked Hyrule’s hair gently, ghostly fingers brushing through his brown curls. It brushed out sticks and leaves from his hair, placing them on the ground.

Wind stayed as still as possible, narrowing his eyes to take a better look at the ghost. It had the form of a child and wore a green tunic with an ocarina at its hip. It carried a small sword with a pink gem in its hilt. Wind could have sworn he had seen it before.

Maybe he could try to talk to it. He sat up straighter and cleared his throat. “H-hello.” His voice came out high pitched and awkward. Well, curse his body.

The child stilled. Its head twitched to stare at Wind with wide, empty eyes. That part always creeped him out a little. “What’s - uh - what’s up?” He tried to feign normalcy.

The ghost jumped to its feet and quickly darted away and out of the cave, quivering. Well. So much for conversation. Wind grimaced.

A groan next to him and he turned to see Legend glaring at him. Next to the fire, with the red flickering over his face, he looked like a demon. Wind shivered and pressed himself against the wall. If he tried enough, could he become part of the wall? “Sorry.”

“Is it my watch?” Legend grumbled.

Wind quickly shook his head before realising that he was doing such a good job at trying to hide from Legend that he probably couldn’t see him. “N - uh - no. Sorry.”

Legend groaned and buried his face in the sand. When he finally heard soft snores, Wind relaxed. Ganondorf? Easy. Phantoms which drained the life out of you? No problem. But a pink haired, sleep deprived teenager going through a midlife crisis? No, thank you.
