His fake smile fallen as he took in the sight of her, her eyes half-lidded as she curled a finger under his chin to tilt his head up slightly. It was easy behind closed doors. Just do as she says, follow her rules.

    He couldn’t do that as easily outside, though. Pretending that everything was as it was before required full concentration and energy. He caught himself making odd pauses during discussion, waiting for her to approve his speaking. Looking over to her for approval before doing certain tasks, even when they were shouted at him. He’d started hurting his back from how often he’d hunch over or try to lower his gaze to even come a few inches shorter.
