Summary
Bucky Barnes was never meant to live through this war, he knew it deep down inside of him. Death crept along his bones and whispered to him at night in snowy Austria. When he was the one selected of his captured friends and comrades to go to the experiment room no one returned from, it wasn't a surprise to him at all. He had one small reprieve, one small fantasy to carry him through, because there's no way it was real. The soft plush of Steve's lips and the warmth of his cheeks pressed to his. At least he thinks so. Steve was taller, bigger-- healthy. He had a team behind him. He was Captain America, the strength of his body finally matching the light in his soul. There was a weight missing from Bucky's neck, and an ache in his chest. Maybe he'd tell himself the story again... what was his name?
