The late afternoon sun is hot enough that they can see mirages on the highway ahead. It's the only evidence they have of temperature sometimes, absent their ability to feel. Well that and the moments on people’s faces when the heat breaks. Thomas likes to watch them when a breeze rolls through, the release of tension, the shining skin, hair pushed around by some invisible force.
