Chapter Text
“Heard anything about Tyler yet, Josh?”
“No. I haven’t.” I looked up from my torch, slightly startled by the sudden presence until I realized it was only my fellow Torchbearer, Gabe. His expression contorted at my response.
“I have to be honest, I’m starting to worry that he might be-“
“We don’t think like that. Don’t even say it. I’m still trying to project. You know he’s my top priority right now. There are other Torchbearers at camp who can bring more people into Trench- like you.” I snapped. Gabe nodded and retreated. I felt a pang of guilt but decided not to call after him to apologize. They all know I’m busy..
I went back to focusing on my torch. The flame had dwindled since I averted my attention. I took a deep breath, trying to empty my thoughts and just focus on Tyler. I had to find him. The flame began to glow yellow. Good, I thought. That’s a sign it knows his location. Now just.. take me there… I closed my eyes. The familiar feeling of vertigo took over as I felt wind in my ears- it was like I was floating. I never dared to open my eyes as I projected myself. I jolted to a stop and was seated. There was something in my hands. I slowly opened my eyes and my senses began to return to me— there was music. Someone singing. And an audience. I was on a stage, sitting in front of drums. I picked up on the beat and began to play flawlessly. I didn’t even know the song but something about projection made it easy for me to blend in. And besides, I loved drumming. I didn’t have a chance to do it so much anymore. I scanned the crowd for Tyler as this song ended and the next began. I couldn’t see him.. maybe he didn’t catch the front row and he’s somewhere towards the back. I glanced at the singer- dyed pink hair and colorful clothing. My drumming was like muscle memory so I decided to focus on what he was singing.
“I can feel my saturation leaving me slowly…” That voice sounded familiar. “Broke the news on mom’s vacation, oh but you know me.. lowkey. I’m alright. Would you say you depend on the weather-?” My brow furrowed. He continued to sing this strange propaganda and I attempted to place his voice. He turned to face me and we made eye contact. I nearly stopped drumming. Tyler. “I know it’s hard to believe me- it’s a good day!”
