Chapter Text

Day 1

It was a weird week at Top Gun. There was a short week in the middle of a course so the current class was getting an extra few days which were being filled… well, Maverick had brought in some friends for a little training exercise. He’d been tight lipped with his aviators about exactly what they were going to do for the week. It was a surprise when they came in to find an eclectic group of senior and flag grade aviators in the room.

“As you can see,” Mav began. “We have company. You have lucked out and we will be taking a break from the standard program for the week. Instead you will be participating in an exercise alongside some of the finest aviators ever to complete the program.”

AJ smiled to himself. He was very glad to be in this Top Gun class.

“Vice Admiral Tom Kazanski, US Navy. He/Him callsign ‘Iceman’,” Ice said.

“Brigadier General Jayne Eastick, Australian Army. She/Her callsign ‘Brig’,” The Brig said.

“Brigadier General Sam Carter, US Air Force. She/Her callsign ‘Doc’,” Sam said.

“Captain Harmon Rabb, US Navy. He/Him callsign ‘Hammer’,” Harm said.

“Colonel Paul Davis, US Air Force. He/Him callsign ‘Disaster’,” Paul said.

“Colonel Evan Lorne, US Air Force. He/Him callsign ‘Star’,” Lorne said.

“Group Captain Simon Eastick, RAAF. He/Him callsign ‘Flyboy’,” Simon said.

“Lieutenant Commander Steve McGarrett, US Navy. He/Him, callsign ‘Bud’, Steve said.

“Major Cassie Fraiser, US Air Force. She/Her, callsign ‘Phoenix’,” Cassie said.

“Squadron Leader Max Eastick, RAAF. She/They, callsign ‘Eureka’,” Max said.

“And you all know who I am,” Mav said. “For the rest of this week each pilot and RIO will be paired with one of our guests for a series of exercises. Where you will learn… I don’t know, Navy gave us an extra week for this class. We’ll all fly some planes and hopefully show each other a thing or two. See the noticeboard outside for your assignments, introduce yourselves and regroup in an hour.”

Ice smiled at his shoes.

That night they were all at the Hard Deck. Mav was tucked agreeably into his husband’s side.

“This is their song?” Mav said.

“It’s a long story,” The Brig said.
