The Wedding That Never Was

Summary:

Jason promised to marry Tim when they were kids.
A promise Tim held on hope for all through Jason's death and resurrection.
So why was it that Roy was standing on that stage with a ring on his finger and not Tim?

Work Text:

"Will you marry me?" Jason had asked as if it was the most normal thing in the world.

Tim stood rooted where he stood, shock evident in his posture. He was only twelve years old, Jason only fourteen himself.

Jason took note of Tim's shocked expression as he spoke again with a smile. "Oh no sorry, I meant when we're older! I know it's a little soon right now."

The older boy smiled sheepishly as he rubbed nervously at the back of his neck.

Tim's surprise died down a little as he looked up at Jason fully clad in his Robin suit. The two had only been dating for two weeks but Tim knew already this was the boy he wanted to spend his life with.

With a large smile on his face Tim answered. "Of Course J." Jason could barely contain his joy as he picked Tim up and swung him around, the two giggling into the night air.

"Will you marry me?" Jason had asked for the second time in his life, not that he remembered the first.

Roy was surprised but with a large smile he answered quickly. "The word "Yes." Was barely past his lips when Jason jumped up to hug his new Fiancé.

The Batcave erupted in cheers to congratulate the new couple. Bruce for the first time in a long time had a genuine smile plastered on his face.

Tim stood in a corner away from the happy crowd. He clapped slowly for the happy couple, trying to mask his true feelings and failing miserably.

It was not as if anyone would pay much attention to him, everyone was so wrapped up in Jason and Roy's happiness they had know time to care for Tim's breaking heart.

Dick was the only one who looked his way, a sympathetic look on his face. Tim attempted to mouth the words "I'm okay." But only a quiet sob came out as he saw the newly engaged couple seal their happiness in a kiss.

The wedding was stunning, Tim could admit that much to himself. Of course with Alfred on decorating duties there was never any doubt of that.

Jason looked gorgeous in a tuxedo and Roy looked the happiest Tim had ever seen him. The two almost looked like the perfect couple.

Dick was sat at Tim's side. He placed a comforting hand on Tim's shoulder as the only one to know of Tim and Jason's past. The only one to know how broken Tim felt.

Tim knows it's foolish to hold on to a promise he was giving at twelve years old. Foolish to think Jason would've still loved him as they got older.

Maybe Tim could be happy for Roy if him and Jason had broken up under different circumstances. But as he looks at the two on the stage he can't help but blame the Lazarus.

Jason didn't come back the same. All happy memories gone, replaced only with anger, pain, and hatred. When he first woke there was no love for Tim, only Anger at the boy who replaced him.

Tim tried to shake himself free of his own mind as he glanced back at the stage. Jason had just spoken "I do." As he and Roy leaned in to seal their marriage with a kiss. Tim only hoped he could explain away his crying as tears of joy for the new couple.

Notes:

Fairly short story. Just don't really have the motivation to write anything longer. Not really sure about this formatting but I hope the story gets across clear.
I would love to see someone rewrite this bigger and better than I am capable of. Though that's probably wishful thinking on my part.
