Why did he have to be created with this curse? Every time Disappearing Guy used his vocal cords, he would immediately vanish into the void. It was a little hard to communicate with others. Sometimes he wondered what the point in trying even was.
It became even more frustrating when he met Ming. Ming was different from the other mannequins. He had a baseball cap and googly eyes that made him stand out from the others, which immediately drew Disappearing Guy in. Of course, as soon as he tried to introduce himself, he disappeared.
Disappearing Guy was not ready to give up just yet, though. In fact, it did not take him long to figure out a loophole in his disappearing curse. He figured out that as long as he did not speak, he would stick around. So he found a notebook and a pen and started writing down what he wanted to say.
It payed off well in the end. Ming was understanding of Disappearing Guy’s condition and has been very patient with him. In return, Disappearing Guy was understanding of Ming’s sensitivity to people assuming things and took extra caution with making decisions and statements without assumptions. They were quite happy with each other. In fact, their friendship had blossomed into a full relationship.
The only problem was showing physical affection. They both wanted to. Both had made that quite clear. Ming would always ask first, not wanting to assume Disappearing Guy wanted it, too. And every time, Disappearing Guy would forget to grab his notebook. Due to his excitement, he would blurt out “Yes!!” without fully thinking it through.
And then he would find himself in the darkness of the void.
It was frustrating, and it made Disappearing Guy feel stupid every single time for ruining the moment. How he wished he could just go up to Caine and ask for his curse to be removed. But he doubted Caine would do it. He’d have to make do.
Currently, Ming was visiting Disappearing Guy in his room. He had invited his boyfriend over to discuss this exact problem.
“I am sorry I keep disappearing when you try to initiate something,” Disappearing Guy had written down. “I just get too excited and think only about you instead of thinking about how using my voice ruins the moment.”
Ming read over the message and nodded. “I understand, DG. Maybe I shouldn’t surprise you out of the blue with it. Do you think that will help you control your excitement better?”
Disappearing Guy nodded. “Yes, I think easing into it so I can see it coming will help. Although, there are certain actions you can do without asking.”
“Are you sure? You know how much I hate to assume,” Ming asked.
“I’m sure. Just little things like hand holding and hugs,” Disappearing Guy clarified.
“What if there’s a moment you aren’t interested?”
“Then I will let you know. Even though there’s no way I’d ever reject that kind of affection from someone as adorable as you ;)”
Ming’s wooden face gained a slightly red tint. “You flirt!” he sputtered, still getting used to this type of affection.
Disappearing Guy had to force a laugh down. Ming really was cute when he got flustered like this. He decided to get back on track. “We can try some stuff now, if you’d like.”
Ming read the offer and then looked at Disappearing Guy. “I’d love to.”
Despite not having facial features, Ming could practically feel the broad smile radiating off of Disappearing Guy. The red mannequin set the notebook aside and opened his arms, inviting Ming in for a hug. Ming practically launched himself into Disappearing Guy’s arms, savoring the feeling. Finally, some action after so much failed communication. Ming found himself craving more.
They pulled away after a few seconds, staring at each other.
“Can I kiss you?” Ming softly asked.
Disappearing Guy bit his tongue and simply nodded instead.
Ming reached up and cupped Disappearing Guy’s cheek. Disappearing Guy responded by grabbing onto Ming’s wrist and held it. They stared at each other for a moment, savoring the fact that this was really happening before leaning in and pressing their faces together in the best kiss they could muster. The soft sound of wood gently pressing against each other filled the room before the couple pulled away and rested their foreheads against each other, holding hands.
Breathless and giddy with love, Disappearing Guy forgot about his curse long enough for him to voice his thoughts. “Wow. That was amazing,” was what he wanted to say, but he was unable to make it past “Wow” without the void claiming him once again.
Ming stared at the now empty space right in front of him before he sighed. “Of course….”
Still, today was excellent progress. They’ll get better at this physical affection thing in time, both were sure of it.
