Summary
“It’s not a real kid, Chase.”
Chase is technically underage, he’s a year away from being able to drink but the bartender didn’t bother to check his ID. Chase has always looked a little older than he was, it works in his favor now.
Nobody at a hero bar like this would assume he was so young.
“How the fuck do you think that?” Chase asks, spits. His hands still shake with the memory of it. The beer in his hand shakes with the tremors of his hands. “How the fuck do you do it?”
Mechaman sighs, deep, disappointed. He leans back, taking his whiskey with him.
The rest of the Brave Brigade was downstairs, drinking in victory, dancing with the other heroes, celebrating.
“It’s the Astral Pulse.”

I keep coming back to read this, specifically chapter 3. This has some of the best characterization of the dispatch characters I've seen in a very long time, especially Team Z. Though that's not to discount Royd who's smart, funny, and SO canon in ways that amaze me.
Sonar is one of my favorites in this fic, as his characterization is SO interesting, you know?! The way he's written, his blindness, how he interacts with things, it's all so fun. Invisgal is SO easy to make not likable and it's even easier to make her not CANON when trying to make her not likable but somehow this fic manages to maintain her canon personality and attitude while getting rid of a lot of the not likable shit! It's amazing!
That is to say that the Golem characterization is not only my favorite characterization of Golem PERIOD, but it's some of my favorite characterization of ANY dispatch character. The simple thing of him calling Robert 'Cousin' is so IIIAFBIWEBUIQBAFABIKDJ

Ch3
Robert is fourteen when his dad dies. Robert had been promised, years ago, when he had gotten his name, that Robert Robertson Junior was going to die, and he was going to die in the suit. That Robert Robertson the Third was going to have to know what to do when there was a body in the pilot's seat, needed to know what to do when the time came. A promise Dad never kept. Robert Robertson Junior died over sixty fucking feet away from the cockpit, bleeding out from a gunshot wound. --

Golem, a construct made of hastily put together construction material, brought to life by a rogue supervillain. Controlled, used as a brute until the supervillain got caught and put into power restrained.A lot of petty crimes. A lot of loitering. Aiding and abetting. Small stuff. Simple stuff. Robert wouldn’t even bother going after these kinds of criminals while in the suit.
A construct.
Held together by a now-unknown force, ever changing, ever shifting, ever growing. Always adapting into something new.
“I think he’s lonely.”
Robert looks up, and sees Blazer looking at him.-“Maybe.” Robert agrees. “Maybe.”
-
“Hi Z-Team.” Robert says. “My name is Robert Robertson and I’m your new dispat-”“No fucking way.”
“That’s your real name?”
“Who the fuck-”
“This is a joke, right?”
“Robert? Roberto? Rob?-”

The first shift was a shitshow.
-
So Chase is busy!Chase is midway through his shift when he gets a text.
This isn’t unusual, Chase is a popular guy. He’s got family and friends even with his condition, he also sometimes gets spam texts.
It’s when his phone pings for the sixth time that Chase actually cusses, then fishes the damn thing out of his pocket.
Robert’s name, newly added, flashes in huge letters on the screen.
CHASE.
The latest text screams in all caps, it makes Chase panic for a moment- the call on his headset forgotten the lost cat be damned-
DID YOU NOT TELL THEM.
DID YOU NOT TELL THEM THAT IM THE ASTRAL PULSE!?
--
“It might have slipped my mind.”
“Slipped your mind!?”

(Robert doesn’t know how to be Robert. He hasn’t been Robert for fifteen years. He wasn’t Robert in the beginning, when he was still learning how to be, and he wasn’t Robert in the middle either.)(If he had been Robert, truly real, then maybe his dad wouldn’t have-)“Wow.” Blazer can’t help but breathe, the warmth of the Astral Pulse alone makes Blazer feel safe, makes her feel like she can do anything. It resonates with the amulet around her neck, like the feeling of calling a friend from eons away.
Robert tucks it back into his pocket, into the palm of his hand.
The warm remains, lingering, the light fading slowly. The energy still thrums a steady, hypnotizing beat.
Robert’s face relaxes again, just a fraction.Robert shakes his head. “No. The Astral Pulse has to stay with me. That’s my rule.”
Which-
Not ideal, of course, but as a hero hired by SDN he does have a right to things like that. A SDN hero has total ownership of anything developed and made on their own time. They had to write up a huge clause in the hiring contracts for technopaths and the like, it had been a massive legal pain to get through, making sure that nobody was taken advantage of in the situation of who develops what and gets to keep the right to what special invention of the week the nerds down in R&D had made.
Robert, or the previous Mechaman, had made the Astral Pulse, and that means Robert has sole ownership of it.
Whether it’s a smart idea to let Robert keep it or not, that is up entirely to Robert.
(Mandy can’t help but feel the weight of her amulet resting heavy against her collar bones. Mandy knows exactly the feeling of wanting to keep something that makes you super close to home.)
“Then it’s all yours.”
Robert hadn’t wanted to lie, he didn’t want to deceive, he knew that lying would come back to bite him in the ass later. It always did.So Robert hadn’t lied.
He hadn’t revealed the whole truth either, but he hadn’t lied.
(Robert knows what happens when he lies. Nowadays the media would find out, and rip into him. Tearing apart the only ‘non-superpowered’ hero on the block. The police wouldn’t trust him anymore to help out during investigations or in hero work. There’s nothing to get out of lying.)
Chase rolls his eyes, reaching over the divide between their cubicles and ruffling Robert’s hair. “I think that it’ll be nice to get to know you without the thing in your chest holding you back.”
Chase’s hand feels nice, carding through thick hair lightly scraping against a scalp. Robert smiles back, allowing Chase to mess up his hairstyle for a moment longer before pulling back.
(Robert will remember that.)
