Taking Hits For You ('Cause I Wanna Feel Like I'm Supposed To)

Summary:

Finney and Robin used to be friends, back when everything was simple. They practically grew up together, really. They were attached to the hip for years. It’s a mystery why they stopped talking and switched it for glares across the hall, even to Finney.

Finney knows Robin never does anything unless he has a reason to, so he knows there must’ve been a pretty good reason for Robin to hate him, but gods does it make Finney mad. No warning, no note, no nothing. Finney doesn’t even know what he did wrong.

But he doesn’t care now. Their relationship will never be the same. Finney will never see Robin in that beautiful, perfect light again. Especially not when he is currently watching Robin repeatedly punch Moose in the face.

Robin and Finney haven't talked in years and one breakdown brings them together

Notes:

Hi!! so I originally started writing this is like November and I just like polished it up a bit so it can be postedddd I have nine chapters already written and I think I'll get them posted like every two weeks because i've tried every week before and that just wasn't enough time for me but I'll have like eighteen weeks to bust out as many chapters as I can

anyways this fic is gonna be pretty heavy with like mental illnesses and stuff so if that's triggering to you I will ask that you please please please click off, I will put trigger warnings in the notes before each chapter just in case and speaking of this first chapter is pretty light with only like the ending of a fight

so with that being said enjoy!

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Chapter 1: He Needed More Than Me

Chapter Text

Finny hated Robin Arellano. That was a fact. Ever since that asshole started ignoring him back in seventh grade Finney’s hated him. He wishes sometimes that he can punch Robin’s face in, but he knows that will just leave him with the worst beating of his life.

Finney doesn’t really know why Robin’s so angry, but he knows Moose must’ve fucked up big time. His face is completely covered in blood and is so deformed you could hardly recognize him. A broken nose is guaranteed.

The crowd of kids echoed as Robin grabbed Moose’s shirt collar and punched him for the last time before standing up.

Robin turned his head to look at everyone before saying, “If any of you talk shit about…” His voice fell short when he caught sight of Finney in the crowd, which scared the boy. “If any of you talk shit, I will fuck you up.” Robin finished, grabbing his bag and leaving the circle of kids.

Finney stared as Robin walked in the direction of their school. As much as Finney didn’t want to admit it, Robin looked gorgeous.

Finney loved Robin. That was a fact. A horrible fact, but still a fact nonetheless.

Every time Robin touched Finney’s hand, or talked to him in a small, special voice he only used for Fin, or actively tried to hang out with Fin, Finney’s stomach did backflips and his cheeks grew warm. Well, that was before Robin became a bitch.

Maybe Robin was always a bitch. As long as Finney knew Robin, he’d been in constant fights, back talking teachers, even screaming matches with his mother.

Maybe the last one wasn’t fair. Lola Arellano hated her son even more than Finney did.

Fin could relate. That was probably why they understood each other so much. Between the bruises Terrence Blake left on Finney’s skin and the bloody knuckles Robin got for attention from his mother, they were practically the same person, just in different fonts.

School went by fast and it wasn’t until Finney was turning the corner while walking home when he truly woke up from sleeping through most his classes. This might’ve been because he could now see the old car in the driveway of his house, telling him Terrence was home from his work trip.

Terrence was always irritable after getting home from a trip that most of the time doesn’t go well.

Part of Finney wanted to just not go home, but he knew that would just make it worse for when he did go back. Thankfully Gwen is at Susie’s tonight. It’s Friday, so she goes to her friend’s house to not deal with their piece of shit dad.

Finney would stay with a friend too, if he had any. He had some, sure, but they were more like the people who talk to you because all of their real friends aren’t around.

Opening the front door wasn’t scary, or anything. Finney just felt annoyed that he had to come home to this.

Three beer bottles sat on the coffee table and the oven was on even though nothing was in it. Terrence wasn’t anywhere to be found, so he was either passed out in his room or dead in a ditch somewhere. Finney prayed for the second option.

He cleaned up the living room before going upstairs and closing his door quietly. He could’ve slammed it. He almost did, just to see if he could piss off his dad in the first ten minutes of being home, but decided against it after thinking of Gwen’s disappointed look afterwards.

In the safety of his room, Finney pulled out his homework, getting ready to complete all three thousand assignments Mr. Johnson assigned.
