In a flash of motion the blade of Excalibur rests against the hollow of Merlin's neck.
‘You are not fighting back,’ Arthur breathes with the shock and disgust a man can only feel when expecting pain and not receiving it, ‘is it out of trust, or do you truly not care if you die?’
‘If it is by your hand, I would make no attempt to stop it’ Merlin replies, breathing just as heavy, a small shake of his head and scrunch of his brow - as if the answer were obvious. If this was what the king wanted - if this was how a destiny ends - for once in his life Merlin would comply with the order freely.
