Sophia Bailey’s Hockey Romance “Riding the Edge” TV Series Adaptation in the Works at Prime Video
Opposites are set to collide on and off the ice in a steamy sports drama adaptation. Prime Video is currently developing a television series based on Riding the Edge, the bestselling hockey romance series from author Sophia Bailey, which has sold over 8 million copies worldwide across multiple markets.
Principal photography is expected to take place in Montreal and Toronto, though casting and production details remain under wraps.
The series follows Derek Calloway, star captain of the NHL’s Montreal Voyageurs, a disciplined, media-polished golden boy of hockey. Half Canadian and half Japanese, he is the face of the franchise and has no time for his personal life. That is, until Isabelle Lovell, a graduate journalism student, enters his orbit.
Isabelle has spent her life avoiding hockey after being abandoned by her father, John Lovell, a former NHL player turned coach. When John is suddenly hired as head coach of the Voyageurs, she is forced back into the world she left behind. As Isabelle navigates fractured family ties and the suffocating spotlight of professional hockey, her path keeps crossing with Derek’s. What begins as tension between a coach’s daughter and the team’s captain quickly turns into a forbidden, high-stakes connection neither can ignore.
Prime Video has recently doubled down on romance adaptations following the success of YA-leaning hits, and Riding the Edge is expected to continue that momentum with a more mature, explicit tone aimed at adult audiences.

Reporter: Shane, first off, congratulations on winning your third Stanley Cup! As captain of the Montreal Voyageurs, and doing it in dramatic fashion on home ice, it must feel pretty good.
Hollander: Thank you. And yes, it does feel great.
Reporter: I bet! What’s going through your mind right now?
Hollander: [smiles softly] It’s surreal. This one feels really special. Winning the Cup is always incredible, but to do it here at the Centre Bell in front of our fans after everything this season… it means a lot.
Reporter: What are your plans when it’s your day with the Stanley Cup? Any big parties or traditions?
Hollander: I’ll definitely spend some time with my family. But I’m hoping we can organize something with the Irina Foundation pretty soon. I want to bring the Cup to the kids and their families. That’s always been one of the most meaningful parts of winning it for me, just seeing the fans and the community that’s been supporting us for so long.
Reporter: You’ve always been regarded as one of the most vocal, vocal leaders in the NHL. This season, especially in the second half, you seemed noticeably quieter in the locker room and with the media. Was there anything affecting your leadership style this year?
Hollander: [long pause] I’m not going to get into that. We had one goal for this season, like always, and that was to win the Cup. We accomplished that. That’s what I want to focus on.
Reporter: There have been persistent rumors about tension between you and some of your teammates—that you weren’t as involved in team functions or as active in the group as you’ve been in previous years. How do you address those rumors, especially as captain?
Hollander: [slight shift in his seat] We were able to win the Stanley Cup despite whatever rumors or outside noise there was. I think that says enough. This group found a way to come together when it counted, and I’m grateful for every guy who contributed.
Reporter: Your contract expires this summer. You’ve spent your entire career on Montreal, and after winning your third Cup here, can fans expect you back in a Voyageurs jersey next season?
Hollander: [long pause, looks down briefly before looking back at the reporters] Um… [rubs the back of his neck, visibly uncomfortable] Well. [pauses, staring off in the distance like he doesn’t know what to say] That’s… that’s a big question right now. I haven’t made any final decisions yet. I’m going to take some time to enjoy this with my family and think everything through. I don’t have an answer for you today.
Reporter: Is there any part of you that wants to stay long-term in Montreal after everything you’ve accomplished here?
Hollander: [hesitates, opens his mouth then closes it] …I’m not taking any more questions on that right now. Thank you.

I’ve been in the NHL since I was 18, and I’ve been around hockey since I learned how to walk. Every day I wake up and think: I can’t believe this is my life. I’m incredibly lucky for everything I’ve experienced. Being in the public eye has never been easy, especially when labels get attached to you. For a long time, it felt easier to just let things go and keep parts of my life private. But going forward, I want to be more open about who I am.
I am gay.
I was gay when I got drafted second overall. I was gay each time I hoisted the Stanley Cup over my head. And I was gay when I met Ilya Rozanov for the first time. And, years ago, when Ilya and I began our committed relationship, we understood there would be challenges. That’s part of why we chose to keep it private. After a lot of time and honest conversations, we’ve decided we want to share publicly that we are, in fact, together.
We know this won’t be easy for everyone to understand. But we’ve never let our relationship interfere with our commitment on the ice, and I think our career accomplishments speak for themselves.
To Montreal: thank you for everything. Playing here has been an honor I’ll never forget. To Ottawa, my hometown: I’m looking forward to what’s next. Not everyone gets the chance to play for their city alongside the person they love—but I do. I don’t take that for granted. I’m grateful for this next chapter, and I hope I make you proud.

Shane: [laughs] No, I haven’t read it. I’ve heard plenty about it though. [smiles] My husband’s a fan, though.

Meg: Did Ilya actually read it?
Shane: Oh yeah. He read the whole series last year when the adaptation got announced. Ottawa didn’t make playoffs, Montreal was in the first round, so he had a lot of free time without me. He’d send me passages from it too, which was… embarrassing.
Meg: That’s hilarious. And did you two watch it?
Shane: He did. With his teammates, of all people. I refused.
Clara: So, to confirm: Shane Hollander has not watched Riding The Edge.
Shane: No, I haven’t. I heard good things about it, though. I just… I just can’t. Because… well, you know.
Meg: I guess it would be weird to watch something based on yourself.
Shane: Yeah. It is.
Meg: Were you flattered at least?
Shane: Flattered? [tilts hand] Surprised is probably better. Also a little shocked. I didn’t think I was interesting enough to be someone’s inspiration like that. The fictional version of me feels… a lot cooler than I actually am.
Clara: Says the man who bagged Ilya Rozanov.
Meg: Come on, Ilya bagged him!
Shane: It was mutual bagging, let’s say.
Clara: Right. So Ilya’s probably a fan, since Derek Calloway is confirmed to be inspired by you. How does that feel? Especially with Derek being one of the most popular characters on TV right now.
Shane: [sighs] I don’t know. I heard about it years ago, when Jackie Pike mentioned it to me. At the time I just thought—okay, that’s weird—and moved on. It was easy to ignore back then. But now, with how big the show’s gotten, it’s harder to separate him from me. Especially when his whole storyline—this perfect straight love story—is something I’ll never actually have.
Clara: That must be strange.
Shane: Yeah. It’s weird seeing the most popular character on TV be basically a version of you—same job, same career, same everything—but he’s someone people are obsessed with in a way you can’t really relate to. And then there’s this constant comparison. Derek Calloway gets this huge love story, and I just… don’t. Even though I’m happy in my own life, it still messes with your head a bit.
Clara: I can see that. Especially if you were keeping parts of your life private at the time.
Shane: Yeah. It made things complicated. I’d hear people talk about Derek and think—is that how people see me? Is that who they expect me to be? And meanwhile I’m just… not. I’m not straight. I will never love a woman in the way Derek does. But people seem to love Derek more than they like me, which made me kind of envious of his perfect fantasy life. Even though he’s fake. I know it’s dumb. I talked about it a lot with Ilya, honestly. It just felt strange carrying both things at once.
Clara: Did it affect your relationship at all?
Shane: [smiles] No. If anything it made it stronger. It just… clarified things for me. I’m really happy with him. That’s the part of my life that feels most real, honestly. I’ve had all the hockey stuff, all the awards, but Ilya’s the thing that matters most. At some point I just realized Derek Calloway is his own person. He’s not me. And I’m not him either.
Clara: That’s really nice, Shane.
Meg: It is. Speaking of you refusing to watch the show… I think you’re about to now.
Shane: Oh no.
