Anything For You

Summary:

Mark took the time to really look at Rex this time, He was in dull, slightly torn and worn out clothes. His disheveled hair was a dark red color that was shoulder length, he had dark tan skin that was covered in black soot of some sort, and dark green eyes. But Mark quickly turned away as soon as he realized he was staring for too long.

“..Hey.” Rex started slowly. Mark turned to look towards him again.

“Thanks.”

Mark stared at him for a moment before answering.

“...It’s fine, anybody would’ve done the same.”

“No. Not anybody.”

---

What if Rex met Mark first before Eve? How will it change things? And how will it change them?

Notes:

Hey ya'll! This is my first ever fic so uh.. please be nice. Critiques are okay tho. :D
Just for reference Mark lives in the city of Chicago, and not just the Chicago land area suburbs like in canon. Apologies if there are any inaccuracies. (My ass did not read the comics so I just winged that shit) Hope you guys like it! 🥲

Chapter 1: Did A Black Cat Cross Your Path?

Notes:

(See the end of the chapter for notes.)

Chapter Text

Mark Grayson never really had the best luck out there. Everyday, for as long as he remembered, consisted of at least one thing going wrong. Like the time he was walking to Williams’ house to hang out, and while crossing the street had gotten run over by a car. Luckily, it wasn’t too bad and well, he wasn’t dead. He did get an earful from his worried mother for not being more aware of his surroundings though. Or the time he was walking the streets of Chicago when a pot of flowers dropped from someone's balcony right on his head.

Honestly, it felt like the universe had it out for him even before he had his powers.

But, something good did come of it. More specifically someone.

Now going back in time, to recall that day when Mark was 13 years old.

We'll see how a black cat crossing his path changed the trajectory of not only his life, but the boy he met that day as well.

Mark woke up to his alarm clock sounding, signaling it was already time to get up and ready for school. Mark internally groaned and slammed that alarm clock so that it would stop with the obnoxious ringtone. He rubbed his eyes and slid his hands down his face. He felt tired from staying up late by being on the game with William, super bad idea but the damage is done now so he’s gotta have to deal with it.

He let out a sigh and groaned externally this time.

He finally got up from bed after contemplating his bad life choices and started getting ready.

He followed his regular routine, washed up, brushed his teeth, got dressed, did his hair, and then headed downstairs for breakfast. The kitchen smelled of his mom’s signature buttermilk pancakes along with eggs and bacon.

“Mornin’ mom.” He yawned.

Debbie turned around to see her son just entering the kitchen, “Ah, well, good morning sleepy head. How’d you sleep?”

Mark slowly blinked before answering. “Fine, fine, it was good” He responded quicker than he intended to.

“Uh huh.” She said with a raised eyebrow and a knowing look. “So, the eyebags under your eyes mean nothing then?”

“Yeaahhhh…” Mark said with half lidded eyes and an awkward smile.

Debbie snorted and returned a fond smile of her own before she handed him a cup of coffee and his plate of breakfast.

“Here, this should wake you up. And if I catch you playing games in the middle of the night again I'm taking away all of your electronics, you hear?” She said in a stern but playful voice and she turned back to the kitchen.

“Okay, Okay, you don’t have to do that.” Mark said as he held his hands up and sat down on his chair.

He looked at his breakfast and damn did it smell and look good. His mom was right, it did wake him up.

He looked back up at his mom as he began eating and started between a mouthful of food “I swear I won't do it again..”

“You better” Debbie responded playfully.

After a few seconds passed Mark asked “Where’s dad?”

“Oh he’s probably out saving the world again, you know how he is. I mean it’s not the first time he’s been gone for a day or two”

“Oh.. That's Awesome.” Mark had sounded disappointed for a split second before he quickly changed his demeanor to a giddier one.

His mind wondered to his dad out there and wondered what kind of mission he’s doing right now. Maybe he’s in another dimension again? He thought to himself as he continued to daydream on super-heroing as he finished his breakfast. It was probably time to start heading out though.

As he took his last bite and cleaned up after himself he started to head out the door.

“Bye mom! Thanks for the food!” He yelled out.

“Ok bye sweetie! Stay safe out there okay?” She yelled back.

The door shut behind him and he started walking his way to school. The rays of the sunrise seeping through the houses’ windows. Debbie had stared at the door for a while, before huffing and shaking her head. A small smile stretching on her lips.

“Okay, back to work.”

As Mark was walking his usual path to school in the already busy streets of Chicago, he couldn’t help but notice a black cat walking across the street beside him. The cat seemed to be walking towards the same direction as he was, the cat eventually crossed the street over to his side. Stopping to sit down a few steps in front of him.

Mark took his chance and approached it and he started whispering, “Awww, here kitty kitty.” He crouched and slowly reached his hand out in an attempt to pet the cat without startling it. The skinny black cat responded by lifting its head up to the palm of his hand.

That startled Mark a little, but it quickly shifted into a content smile and a breathy laugh. He started to excitedly pet the cat's head and back, but careful enough to not scare it away. Once the cat decided it had enough, it went to rub itself on Mark’s leg and began walking in circles around Mark. Mark stood up and watched as it continued making circles around him as it was looking up at him.

“What’s wrong buddy? Do you want something?” He asked.

The cat merely responded with a short raspy meow and began to walk down the sidewalk as Mark followed. Until it stopped at a different turn than Mark’s usual route. He saw as the cat turned back to watch him, Mark hesitated for a second. Maybe I should follow it..? What if it shows me something cool or important? Mark thought to himself, trying to justify going out of his usual route.

It should be fine, just a little detour before class… I think I’ll be able to get there in time.

Mark followed the cat as it started to walk again, a little faster this time.

He noticed the change in his surroundings after a while of walking, and realized he was in a completely different part of the city.

“Crap”

Okay, maybe this was a bad idea…

Mark started to realize that following the cat into a bunch of sketchy alleyways and shortcuts wasn’t the smartest thing he’s done. He hadn’t realized just how long he’d been following this cat for. Would he even get to school in time? But wait, where was he even? Mark silently cursed himself for not even recognizing where he was, but his thoughts were interrupted as he heard voices. More specifically what sounded like an argument.

“HEY! LET GO OF ME ASSHOLE!”

It sounded like a kid, a boy's voice around his age. Mark's head whipped to the sound of his yelling and went to follow the sound of the boy’s voice. The voices seemed to come from an alley way in between an old rundown Chinese restaurant and a worn out apartment complex. Mark frowned as he got closer and was able to make out more of the words the voices were saying. Along with the boys’ it sounded like there were about two other adult men with him.

He peaked around the corner of the restaurant and saw the men surrounding a boy with dark tan skin and dark red hair, who currently had his back pinned against the wall as one of the men had his hand clenched around the hem of his shirt, the boy appeared to have a bloody nose. Did these guys hit him?

Mark thought about what to do as he also caught the cat walking straight past the scene. Mark’s eyes widened a little at that. Was this… what it wanted me to see?

“Hey- wait!” Mark had tried whispering out to the cat, annoyed at the situation he got caught up in.

Okay.. think Mark, THINK. What would dad do?

Omni-Man would be able to deal with a situation like this easily, knock out the bad guys and save the boy. Easy enough right? But Mark’s only a stupid 13 year old boy with absolutely no powers. So what exactly could Mark do in this situation?

So Mark did what a kid as invested in heroism his age thought he could do.

“HEY!”

Mark yelled at the men as he stood between the men and the boy as he pushed the older man's arm off the boy’s shirt, then with his arms held out and body directly facing the adults, he yelled,

“LEAVE HIM ALONE!”

The boy behind him stared at him with wide eyes, as the adults' confused faces quickly turned into anger and annoyance.

“What the- who the fuck are you kid?” One man said as he looked him up and down.

The other man chimed in, “Don’t stick your nose into this kid, this ain’t your business”

Mark however, didn’t budge, “Don’t care. Leave him alone!”

However, unfortunately for Mark neither of the men had the patience or the sympathy to continue to listen to the black haired boy’s antics. One of them grabbed Mark this time and pushed him off to the side.

“Fuck off kid, or else you’re the next one I’m gonna give a lesson to after I’m finished with this little fuckass thief here.”

The mystery boy watched as Mark stood up again, ran, then proceeded to tackle the older man. He managed to make the man lose his balance, so the boy took this chance as a distraction to try and make a run for it. Only for the other man to grab him. The man punched him causing the boy to tumble onto the floor again.

“Oww…” The boy said as he held his cheek with the palm of his hand.

He watched as the other boy struggled against the man as he himself was pinned to the wall again, he watched wide-eyed as the man had the boy’s back pressed against him with his arm around his neck. The boy was kicking his legs and flailing until he bit the man's arm.

“Ah fuck!”

The man yelled out in pain and threw him to the ground, the black-haired boy fell face-first onto the floor. The dark redhead winced at the scene. But quickly turned his attention back to the man currently pinning him up the wall. He had to do something.

The tanned skinned boy mustered all his strength to kick the man straight in the nuts and pushed the man off him, the man yelled and writhed in pain, doubled over himself by having his nuts kicked by a 14 year old. He ran towards the other boy still trying to stabilize himself off the ground.

“You little bitch- get back here!”

But the redhead only glanced at and ignored the other man who had been covering his arm, that had been dripping out.. blood? Jesus, how hard did this guy bite him? He thought curiously. But going back to his objective he grabbed the other boy and made a run for it.

“Hey, c’mon let’s go!”

Mark, still a little disoriented, was a little taken aback by the suddeness of the situation but quickly got up and ran with the boy as soon as he helped him get up.

The mystery boy had taken him by the hand as they ran. And they ran and ran and ran. Until they no longer heard the voices of the men trying to chase after them, cursing them out in the distance.

Both boys were out of breath, sweaty, and with bloody faces.

After they both took a moment to catch their breath, they finally looked at each other for real this time. Unexpectedly, the redhead boy started to giggle a little. Mark stared at him but started to giggle along with him, until both started to full on laugh. Really laugh. Until tears started to form from laughing so hard. As the laughter died down a little, the mystery boy was the first to speak. “Heh heh… Holy shit man…,”

“..that was fuckin’ crazy.”

“Yeah, yeah, oh geez, look at your face.” Mark replied slightly still out of breath, he was pointing at the other boy’s bloody and bruised face.

“Me?? Dude, look at yours! You sure it ain’t broken?” He laughed and pointed at his nose.

Mark touched his nose and hissed at the pain. “Okay, ow. I mean, I dunno. Maybe?”

“Well shiittt.”

After a moment of silence, they both took the time to take in their surroundings. It seemed like they stopped near a playground. Hopefully far away from the two men.

Mark decided to break the silence by asking, “Hey, um.. what’s your name?”

The other boy turned to look at him.

“Rex. My name’s Rex…. What’s yours?”

“Mark. Mark Grayson.”

“Okay, Mark, Marky Mark, Markus, Marky boy, Mark the hero…” Rex listed names as he held his chin in thought.

“Wha-?”

“Wanna go play on the swings?” Rex interrupted and pointed at the playground swings.

“Uhh, okay.” Mark nodded along.

They both smiled at each other as they walked to the swings when Rex asked. “Watcha’ got in there?”
As he gestured towards Mark’s backpack.

“Oh this? It’s just school stuff..” Then the sudden realization hit Mark. He was supposed to be in school right now.

He audibly gasped, causing the other boy to jump a little.

“What!? What happened!?”

“Oh craapp, I’m supposed to be in school right now!” Mark panicked. “But I’ve got.. zero idea where I’m at right now…”

“Well, me neither so I guess we’re both lost.”

“You’re not worried.. at all? Don’t you have school?”

“Oh me? Nah, I never went to school.”

Mark blinked at that. “Wait seriously..?”

“Nope. But that’s whatever, let’s go to the swings c’mon!” Rex dismissed the topic for now. Both boys headed to the swings, as they talked about what had just happened at the alley way. As they sat down and started to swing. Mark asked, “Soooo uh, why were those guys after you?”

“Oh, I just picked up some money they had dropped on the floor. Which is their own fault by the way. I mean, they should’ve watched where they were going! They had both bumped into each other with their wallets and money in hand, and then they dropped their shit. So I took the chance and just whipped it off the ground! Then they both started to chase me down and then one guy punched me in the face, and then they started cussing me out and whatnot as they were beating me up in that alley way,” He scoffed before continuing.

“Oh! And… then you showed up!" Rex smirked and elbowed Mark at that last part, Mark looked away, a light pink in his cheeks. He rubbed the back of his neck in embarrassment.

“I mean, I tried helping but… I ended up just getting beat up anyways.”

“Well, true, but still.”

Mark huffed a laugh at that.

Rex muttered. He was looking down at the ground now, pushing himself on the swing lightly with his legs. Mark had slowed down on the swings a little, closer to matching Rex’s pace.

They swung in peaceful silence. They took a moment to enjoy the slight breeze that afternoon, the sound of the swings creaking, cars honking in the distance. Mark started to wonder what kind of life Rex had lived to be looking as roughed up as he is. (Not including the fight). He grew more concerned the more he thought about it. His mind went to the spare pocket change he had in his backpack and an idea came to his head.

“Hey, uh, do you wanna get something to eat? I have a bit of money.”

Rex’s face lit up at that, the boy nodded rapidly as he stood up from the swings.

“Hell yeah!”

Mark smiled at that.

“Okay, maybe we can find.. like a food truck nearby or something…oh! Uh, is there anything you want?”

Rex tilted his head and scrunched his face in thought, but quickly just nodded. “I ain’t picky! I’ll eat just about anything.”

Mark simply nodded as he stood up from the swing and started walking with him. They stood side by side, talking about whatever mundane things they could think of, Rex would talk about all the people he got into street fights with, and Mark would talk about the bullies from school. Rex would get curious and ask what school is like, and Mark would tell him all about it. How boring teachers’ lectures could be, but nerve racking and fun at the same time. As long as you hang out with the right people, school can be worth going to. He thought of William at that moment, and wondered if William was thinking where the hell he was right now.

As they were chatting and walking around they stopped at a busy food market on the street. It was lively and full of people, but more importantly they smelled food.

“Oohh damn, does that smell good.” Rex said with half-lidded eyes and a wide smile as he leaned on Mark’s side and slung his arms around him, Mark stiffened at the sudden contact for a bit but immediately relaxed his shoulders and returned a smile of his own.

“Hey look! That guy’s selling burgers!” Rex pointed at a burger stand, It had a light blue tent and had quite the clientele.

They made their way over to the stand and Mark noticed the prices of the burgers on the plastic menu were a little above what he could afford if he wanted to buy two. He just had 6 dollars after all. He looked back at Rex for a second, his eyes glued to the man flipping burger patties.

When it was finally their turn to order Rex had merely pointed on the menu with glistening eyes,

“This one! This one!”

“Um, Just one burger please.” Mark asked politely as he pointed to the same burger on the menu Rex was pointing at.

The man taking the order replied “Alright then that’ll be 5.50$.”

Mark handed him the money as Rex hesitantly turned to him, “Just one?”

“It’s for you. I’ll be fine, I'm not that hungry anyway.” Mark smiled. You look like you need it more than me. Went unsaid.

“...Okay, if ya say so.” He shrugged.

They both stood by the side watching how the food was made as they waited for their order. When their order was finally ready the same man who took the order handed Mark their burger wrapped in plastic-like paper. Mark thanked the man as he handed the burger over to Rex. He hesitated for a moment but quickly unwrapped the burger from the paper and giggled excitedly as they both walked to a less crowded place in the area and took a seat on the sidewalk not too far from the burger stand.

Rex wasted no time in taking a huge bite of the burger as he closed his eyes in delight.

“Man, is this shit fucking good.” Res muffled in between bites.

Mark handed him his water bottle from his backpack, “Here, so you don’t choke.” He laughed slightly as he said that.

Mark let him eat in silence as he looked towards the crowd of people. He looked at a toddler who was holding his dad’s hand, both walking and laughing without a care in the world. Mark’s mood soured at that, a twinge of sadness clinging to him. His dad was a hero. He was busy saving the world, so he shouldn't be sad…

He wondered what his dad was doing right about now.

His thoughts were interrupted as Rex was waving half his burger in Mark’s face. It looked more like half of that half to be more precise. Mark, startled and confused, “Wha-?”

“Here.” Rex interrupted as he was pushing the burger piece onto his face.

Mark looked at him as he was still chewing a mouthful of that burger. “Okay, ...thanks.” Mark gave him a small smile as he took the burger piece from his hands. He took a bite of the burger, “Woah, you're right. This is really good.”

“See? Told ya.”

The two sat in peaceful silence for a while, watching the crowd of people. People from all over the city, all with different lives. Each with their own story to tell. Stories of triumphs, happiness, sadness, and disappointment. And out of all these people, out of all the chances, these two kids were able to meet. Two boys with completely different upbringings were now sitting down sharing a burger together. One boy was just on his way to school that morning, the other was a homeless kid trying to survive after just having killed somebody. But Mark didn’t know that about the other. All he saw was a boy struggling and leaped in to help.

But that peace didn’t last long. It started with a woman’s scream not so far from them. Then more screams began to erupt in the distance. Both boys instantly stood up to get a better view of what was going on. Then they heard it, a gunshot. Multiple gunshots. People began running, almost trampling over each other.
Mark and Rex stood by the side to avoid getting trampled on, their wide eyes looking towards the directions of the gunshots.

“What the hell was that?” Fear started to show on Rexs face at the sound of it.

“Villian attack...?” Mark guessed as he was trying to get further away from the stampede of people.

“O-or just thugs? Holy shit we gotta get outta here.”

Mark nodded as both began, Mark turned to face backwards but skidded to a stop when he saw a teenage girl lying on the ground, hunched over in pain. She looked injured on her leg, she tried to get up but failed to do so. Rex stopped to see what he was looking at, and grabbed his arm, “C’mon Mark let’s go!” He tried pulling his arm but Mark wouldn’t budge.

“I have to go help her!!”

“Are you crazy!? You might get shot!”

“I can’t just leave her there!”

Mark yanked his arms back as he sprinted towards the girl.

“Wait! Mark!”

Mark kept running towards the girl, trying to avoid all the people left running away from the scene. He noticed as he got closer how many more people were caught in the crossfire. He frantically looked around, there was no sign of a shooter in sight. He heard the gunshots though, so he had to be quick. As soon as he got near the girl he immediately got to it.

“Here! Let me help!”

The girl grunted in pain as he helped her up by putting his arm over his shoulder. They started to walk with Mark trying to help her steady herself. They didn’t get far when they heard a click of a gun behind them. Both of them turned around with wide eyes at the realization. There stood a man, clad in all black. Reloading his gun, pointing it at them.

Wait. I don't want to die.

Dad?

Dad where are you?

I need you.

pleas-

However, his thoughts were interrupted by the man's arms blowing up suddenly.

A loud boom erupted from behind them,

Mark’s eyes widened at the sight. His arms were blown to pieces, he was screaming in pain as he tumbled down to his knees. Mark had turned around to see Rex with his arm up, like he had thrown something at him. An unreadable expression on his face. When Rex turned to look at him and the girl he quickly went to help.

“Rex? What did you-? Mark had asked, still in shock as Rex went to help the girl on her other side.

“Magic trick.” Rex’s hands glowed with tiny sparks coming from them.

“See?”

Despite the screaming man not so far behind them, Mark's eyes sparkled in amazement. “You’re a superhero?”

“Wha-? Oh, um no… Uhhh speaking of!” Rex looked around for a distraction and pointed at the sky.

“Look! It’s Omni-Man!”

Mark froze at the name.

“Where-”

“Gotcha!”

Mark turned towards the sky to see that there was no Omni-man. Just an empty sky. He turned back to look at Rex. A disappointed look on his face.

“Rex. Now’s not the time.”

“Okay, my bad.” he sighed.

They had finally heard the police sirens coming after what had felt like an eternity. The girl that they had been helping walk finally spoke. “Hey.. I think we’re okay right now, you can set me down on that bench over there…”

“Oh uh, okay!” Mark had stuttered out.

By the time she had sat down on that bench, the police had already gotten out of their cars, evaluating the situation. Until they had noticed the shooter on the ground, they quickly surrounded him as the ambulance and its medics hurried to the injured. Saying that the cops were shocked by what they saw was an understatement. From afar Rex watched their shocked faces react to the now armless shooter. He turned back to Mark to see him trying to tend the girls’ wound with a first aid kit in his backpack. What middle schooler carries first aid in his backpack? And why didn’t he use it on them before?

The girl spoke again, “Thank you.. Thank you so much, both of you..” She buried her face in her hands as she started to sob. Mark took a step to her side with the uninjured leg to give her a side hug, Rex watched beside him. He watched how deeply he cared for people, he recalled how he had leaped in to try and save him from the men barely this morning. He didn’t know him and yet, he still risked his life for him. He looked at his hands. They had a person's blood on him even if said person was a scumbag. Yet when Mark looked at his sparkling hands in awe, he had asked him if he was a superhero..

How could someone look at him and call him a superhero? Mark did. Mark fucking Grayson did. Just some random ass kid he just met. God, not even his parents gave a shit about him so why does he?

It was starting to get late already. Mark turned to look at Rex as he was staring at the police arresting the man. They had signaled some medics over to the girl and she was quickly taken care of and brought to an ambulance. They had both sat down where she had sat. Rex broke the silence by asking, “Hey, why’d you think I was a superhero?”

Mark blinked at the question. “Well, I mean.. cuz you saved us. You saved me, twice today. Plus you got super powers.” Mark gestured towards his hands and chuckled at the last part. As if his question was silly.

Rex opened his mouth to answer but stopped himself when Mark turned to look at him. His deep brown eyes looked straight at him.

“Do… you have a place to stay?”

“..I-uh no. No I don’t” Rex stuttered as he looked away.

“I can try sneaking you into my room?”

Rex’s eyes widened at that as he turned to look at him. “You-You really mean that?”

“Mhm.” he nodded.

“...Why?”

“Why wouldn’t I?”

“Because I’m literally still a stranger to you! I- I just don’t get it. Why do you care so much?” Rex paused for a moment. Rex couldn’t stand this, he wasn’t used to kindness. He doesn’t know why he’s feeling this way. But for some reason, Mark, treating him like this has been giving him the urge to push him away. He doesn’t like feeling afraid of just the slightest hint of any kind of possible connection. Back in the alley Rex had considered just leaving Mark there and making a run for it, hell he tried before one of the men caught him. So why?...Just why..

“...Why are you being so nice to me?” He said it quieter this time. Pleading, glossy green eyes staring back at kind deep brown ones.

Mark stared at him for a moment, his lips parting as if wanting to say something. Instead, he had opened his arms and wrapped them around him, resting his chin on the other's shoulder. Rex froze, wide eyed. He stood there for a brief moment, hesitantly lifting his arms up. Eventually wrapping his arms around the other boy, burying his face into the crook of his neck. For the first time in a long time, Rex let it all out. Mark didn’t mention the wetness seeping into his shirt, something in which Rex was grateful for. Rex’s barely contained sobs and tears were beginning to be drowned out by the sound of rain. For the first time in his life he felt safe. Cared for. Like he actually mattered to somebody. In the arms of the boy he had only just met a few hours ago, a boy he barely knew. And yet it felt like he had known this kid forever.

The rain had started pouring now, both completely soaked. There were still the sirens, the colors red and blue glowing brighter due to the increasing darkness of their surroundings. Neither knew how much time had passed since they had first met at the alley.

A policewoman had approached them, “Hey! Are you kids alright?”

Both boys, already separated from their embrace at this point, turned to look at her, “Yes ma’am.” Mark answered while Rex had merely nodded without looking her in the eyes.

“Alright, due to the nature of this situation I’m going to need to bring you guys in at the station and out of this rain for questioning, alright? Think you can do that for me?”

“Mhm.” Both boys nodded. Rex hadn’t responded though.

“Okay great, don’t worry you boys aren’t in any trouble.” She flashed them an apologetic smile.

“We just need to know what happened here alright? And to also contact your guy’s parents.”

Rex frowned at that, he looked like he wanted to say something but decided against it when he felt Mark’s hand holding his. Mark turned to look at him with a reassuring smile and nodded. “You’ll be fine.” He whispered as he gestured towards the lady. They began to follow behind her as she started walking towards a police car. They both situated themselves in their seats as the cops were talking. Both of their hands are still attached to each other. Each boy looked outside the window on their own side, watching the raindrops fall and drip on the window. The car had already started moving, their silence stretching from seconds to minutes. Until Rex finally broke it, “Hey, which raindrop do you think will win?” he had asked in a hushed voice.

Mark turned to look at his window, squinting a little to see all his options. “Hmm, I think the one on the top right’s got it.”

“Yeah? Well I’m betting on the bottom left one.”

“Hey! That doesn’t count, it's already on the bottom!”

“Uhhh yes it does!”

“Nuh uh!”

“Yuh uh!”

As they both argued and teased with each other over a raindrop race, the city’s lights began to come to life. Night had already fallen upon them, their long day coming to an end. The rest of the ride they had continued to argue over mundane things, trying to find entertainment in what little they could find. For a moment Mark had forgotten about how the boy had blown a man’s arms off, about the shooter and all the people who had fallen victim, and the men in the alley. All he thought about was the mystery boy sitting across from him. He smiled at him, squeezing his hand a little. Rex returned a smile of his own. After deciding they had enough of each other's shenanigans, they both agreed it was best to indulge in some much-needed rest. All the events of today had made them forget the stings on their bleeding noses and bruised cheeks. They had leaned onto each other, Mark yawned, resting his head on Rex’s shoulder. Rex rested his head on top of the other’s and closed his eyes. Too tired to care about the sudden touchiness of practically a stranger. They had let sleep wash over them as they closed their eyes. The sound of rain comforting them, aiding in their sleep. The city’s lights continued to be as bright as ever. Highlighting their faces from time to time as the car kept moving.

Their soft snores filled the car. Their heads resting on the other and their hands still entangled. The policeman who had been driving the car took note of the silence and sighed, “Finally, some peace and quiet...”

The same policewoman from before was in the passenger seat, she turned back to look at them, a small smile formed on her lips.

“Huh, wonder what they must be dreamin’ about.”
