“I’m dying," Egg says, one easy summer afternoon in their treehouse.

“What?” Wemmbu asks. “No. No, Egg, you aren’t. That’s not funny, bro,” he insists. "You’re not. Are you? You’re not, right?” he pleads. His mind is in a tailspin, utterly lost and confused because Egg is his day-one.

In the beginning, there was Wemmbu and there was Egg, playing in the rose-gardens and daring each other to fly across the void, and in the end there will be Wemmbu and there will be Egg, bleeding away on some blown-up battlefield.

“I am,” Egg says, gently. “I’ve been sick for a long time,” Egg continues, and he looks down at the midnight pants of his suit, almost ashamed. He sighs, looking up and meeting Wemmbu’s eyes again. “I’m going to die in three days,” he says.
