Work Header

Misery is a common theme here<3

Summary:

Intern’s experience at the animal hospital is somehow worse than their experience with Dr. Harlow.

More tags to be added bc I already KNOW I’m gonna make everyone suffer. I need the fic to match the title and it will live up to its name.

Notes:

I’m kind of new to writing, so please give tips! I’m completely new to writing animals, so yuppers! I love animal hospital and read a bunch of cool fics on here. I’m taking a break from my other fic so why not start a new one:D

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Chapter Text

The intern stared up at the looming hospital. Their nerves were high as they watched animal’s enter and exit. They didn’t know why they were so nervous, well, they knew a reason why. Wherever they went, disapproval eyed them. They’ve gotten used to it by now but it still upsets them to see the look of disgust on the animals faces.

Taking a deep breath, they walked across the parking lot and into the glass doors of the hospital. It wasn’t much different from the medical facility they go to every couple months but it seems more..frantic. The employees or their now coworkers don’t even notice them as they walk in. Not that it’s a bad thing, they don’t want people to look at them.

Sharp eyes stare at them from the reception desk. The intern only lowers their head as they walk up to the window. “H-hi..I um..here for my first shift..” they try not to bite their lip, that used to be a nervous habit but after what happened. Now It would spilt it open.

“Oh! oh..” the smile left the secretary’s face as her eyes looked the new intern up and down. She barely hid the repulsion from her eyes. “I’ll go get Betty.” She turned away and walked out the break room, and down the hall.

“Who are you.” Demanded the feline. Whose gaze only became more accusing somehow.

“Oh uh..yeah..”

“Your name is yeah?”

“N-no it’s Jamie.”

“Why are you here. I know what you are, and your kind isn’t welcome here.”

Jamie had prepared for this conversation, he knew it was coming. He took a deep breath so we wouldn’t stutter, that would only make him more suspicious. “Dr. Harlow suggested I-“

Jamie jumped back as a gun was raised and pointed at their head. “Do not lie to me.”

“I-I’m not! Really..Dr. Harlow suggested I come here to earn more experience and knowledge..” it sounded rehearsed and they both knew it. He knew if he told the truth…

“Marai!” Jamie looked to see another cat, but this one was white, a few grey spots on her fur. “Put the damn gun down before you scare the thing!” She stomped over to them both, arms crossed as she rolled her eyes. She had a heavy southern accent that caught them off guard. “That damn doctor, he did it again..”

“H-hi?”

“Well hurry up would ya! I have patients to treat!”

“Betty please take room 8 I’m really busy!”  The red dog speed walked across the hall and into the 1-5 hallway.

“My name is Jamie. Dr. Harlow-“

“Yeah yeah, that’s all I need to know for right now. Mirai, show em how to work receptionist for a while. When things cool down I’ll be back to show em everything else.” She left as quickly as she came. Are all their coworkers assholes?

Mirai sighed with irritation and motioned for the poor intern to come in. They already knew they were going to hate this job as much as they hated what that doctor turned them into.
