Work Header

if i took you, you would never want to leave. (right?)

Summary:

you cannot trap a bird and expect it to thrive, but god, it just looks so lovely in that pretty silver cage.

Notes:

hi. its been a while. this is inspired by that one song from Doki Doki Literature Club (I think it's called 'Your Reality'?) but it's really just me taking one line, stealing it, and building off that.

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

Is it love if I take you or is it love if I set you free?

On one hand, you'd be mine.

I would have something beautiful, something no one else could have. I would give you anything you wanted.

All you would have to do is ask and you could have trinkets, affection, my devotion, my life, anything.

I would listen to your sorrows, kiss your scars, hold you through pain and fear, be brave when you cannot and fulfill any and all requests you might have.

You would never be alone again and neither would I.

You wouldn't have to spend your nights in the dark, staring through your white ceiling, wondering what led to this empty life and this bland view.

At least, that's what it's like for me.

If it's the same for you, I wouldn't dream of letting it continue this way.

You don't know how I long to have you as mine, to find you in my grasp and to be allowed keep you.

...

If I were to capture you between my hands like a bumblebee, you wouldn't sting me would you?

No, you would be home, right? You would know I want to keep you and you would thrive in my hands.

Is it bad that sometimes I want to keep you?

Sometimes I think you want to be kept.

But. On the other hand, oh, how lovely it would be to watch you flourish.

I'd give anything to have a chance at witnessing you in your element, seeing you on your own and successful and happy.

I would still give you anything you needed but in this reality you wouldn't need me as much as I wish you did.

A bird in captivity always appreciates the sky more once it sees it for the first time but maybe you wouldn't mind being born with the sky.

You look so beautiful when you live to life you dream of leading, the life of wind in your hair, left behind worries and independence.

If I kept you, you would still have wind in your hair.

You would still leave behind your worries.

But how will I give you independence if you live in my embrace?

...

I'm not sure anymore.

I can't choose between holding you close to me, feeling your warmth and keeping you safe, or letting you run through fields, out of my view but I'd know you're smiling.

I don't want to choose.

I don't know how.

Notes:

I drafted this in an email to myself at 3 AM while listening to Mary by Alex G so hopefully it isn't bad?? also, super really DON'T read too deep into this, I don't know what possessed me this time. also also, I'm aware the title isn't very fitting, I just liked it.
