Chapter Text
I never liked the color orange
There was nothing special about it
My love for it didn’t flourish
Till you died like the flowers on your bedside table
Eyes wide open but the fire snuffed out
There was nothing I could do but sit there
And look at you
Look at the woman who once stood so tall
Now laying stout in the hospice bed
The nurses barely knew you
I barely knew you
Clinging to what I had of a good role model
Gone as quickly as you arrived
Im bitter like an unripe orange
Like a blossom with chemical petals
You were sweet like tangerine sunsets and summertime popsicles.
That night, when we got the call
I was full of so much anger and frustration
I was found with the color I dislike the most
The orange skies kissing the tips of the blue ridge
The same gentle way you kissed my forehead goodnight
An orange greening on your nightstand
You tried to get me to eat it but I didn’t
I should’ve.
