Summary
Fingolfin blinked at the sight in front of him. Then blinked again.
Nope. This clear hallucination was still in his room. Fingolfin tried blinking again, hoping that this would all prove to just be a figment of his imagination.“Nolofinwë, you know I love you, but are you going to just stand there and blink, or come and try on your outfit?”
Bless Anairë’s heart. Fingolfin was grateful, he really was, that Anairë picked up his ceremonial wear for the feast tonight, but oh wow.
As it was, he was now staring at the robes and garments he was to wear tonight, and they were red and gold. The colors of the House of Fëanor. Sometimes, Fingolfin really did wonder if the Valar--or Eru--liked to play tricks on the elves.
OR:
Fingolfin wears the colors of the House of Fëanor to a feast, and Fëanor wears the colors of Fingolfin. Denial and heartfelt conversations ensue.Edited: March 2025 for better flow/language

OR The Huntress of Cuiviénen
--
In point of fact, Melkor had never truly been prey. Oh, Oromë had hunted him, but Melkor had been five steps ahead, raising mountains and fortresses and disguises against Oromë’s pursuit. He did not know how to act like it.
That was alright. Indis was a good teacher; she could show him.

Summary
Aredhel seeks freedom, and finds one cage after another.
*****
It is, it should be, the worst moment in her life. Grandpa Finwë, who was always so kind and took such delight in his grandchildren, is dead. Dead! During Aredhel’s lifetime, no one has ever died before. The Light is gone, replaced with a choking darkness. Everything she has relied on, everything she has taken for granted, has fallen apart. And yet - it is change. It is transformation. In the space of hours, they are departing for Middle-earth, as she had once dreamed - with her father, with her brothers.
Her cousins say they have to get out before the Valar stop them. Aredhel doesn’t believe them until she comes to the shores of the Great Sea and sees them caught in battle, driven back from the ocean. She throws herself into the battle to rescue her cousins without a second thought. A day ago, she had never seen death. Now, she has dealt it.
In the years that follow, on the Ice, she tries not to wonder if her father led the host over the Helcaraxë in part because he feared to subject his little daughter to the Valar’s judgement.

Summary
Once, in infancy, he was their child-king to be, heir of Elu Thingol and Lúthien Tinúviel and Dior Elúchil. Now, he is an open wound. They love him, they welcome him, they are as kind as they can be, but a thousand little things about him make them flinch. Inheritors of a culture lost and burned and fragmented, they can never take a king who constantly reminds them of their enemies.
The immediate foes outside him, the servants of Angband, are easy to fight. His other enemies are inside him, have made him one of them, and he cannot escape.

Summary
Melkor reaches out to Sauron instead of Ungoliant in concocting his evil plan. This would go well, if not for the minor detail that Fëanor is the most paranoid and stubborn person to ever live.
