Mavis discovered Bertram at an old, abandoned mine while she was helping restore it, and now the little engine has been repaired and is ready to work on the Skarloey Railway. He’s a very brave engine, but a little excitable. Meanwhile, the Skarloey Railway engines have been dealing with several problems. Peter Sam has more problems with the refreshment lady, and Duncan… oh, I am spoiling the stories. I mustn’t say anything more, or else I’ll ruin the book.

Dear Readers,
Recently, Bear had an accident on an old abandoned line near where the Mountain Railway Engines live. This gave the Fat Controller an idea, and he began a new project to repair the old line and turn it into a major tourist destination. This included a new branchline around a lake and a grand new station at the city of Peel Godred. The engine he assigned to help the Big Engines rebuild the old line was Oliver, and his stories will be told – but what the Silly Big Engines did was, I felt, far more entertaining. And it will serve them right for being so mean to poor old Edward.

He was sent to work on the repairs from the Little Western, and he certainly found the new job a very interesting experience! From dams to scrapyards, Oliver definitely has a few stories he wants me to tell… and a few he’d rather I didn’t. I’ve been rather nice to old Ollie though, especially considering how the Big Engines fared after their boasting…

I remember having a very interesting conversation with you not so long ago about Duke and why some people see him as a something of an ‘authoritarian’ character, with a much harsher view on the world compared to the other ‘old, wise’ engines. It has everything to do with Duke’s upbringing – Granpuff lived on the oldest and roughest part of Sodor during an era of revolt, giving him a rather darker early life compared to Edward, Trevor and the other ‘golden oldies’. As a result, Duke rarely talks about his past – and to hear about it was a great honour.

There is not much I can say that 'you are an incredible friend' doesn't encompass. You've influenced my writing more than you can imagine, and I am proud and thankful to call you my friend. This is for you, it's the least I could do: here is a story all of your own. Not much is known about Neil, the ‘ugly but kind’ box-tank engine that collected Skarloey from the port and delivered him to his new railway. This is mostly due to the issues the Sodor and Mainland Railway had – much of which will be talked about in this story – and also because at the end of his career, Neil just… vanished.
