He called again, softly.

And somehow, Cale believed him. For now, he clung to those words like a drowning man to driftwood.
He slowly uncovered his face and gazed up at his father.
Deruth smiled, still stroking Cale’s hair with infinite patience.
"It’s alright," he whispered, "everything will be alright."
Even knowing how shattered the future may yet be—
“Rest well, my son. You can sleep as much as you want. And when you wake up, father will still be here. It’s a promise.”
For now, Cale believed.

His vision blurred, swimming through a haze. As he tried to rub his eyes, what he saw instead startled him—small, chubby hands, far too tiny to be his own. His muscles felt sluggish, uncooperative. He could not move as he willed.
“Ue?”
He didn’t know what startled him more: waking in an unfamiliar place, seeing his hands shrunk to baby-like stubs, or hearing his voice altered into something strange and unfamiliar.
Or perhaps, it was all of it—everything, all at once.
