Summary
Duke thinks now might be a bad time to try and convince Bruce he isn't tired, not when he's got drool on his cheek from snoring away in the batmobile for an hour, "I wanted to help." He whispers again, but it sounds childish in his own ears.
But Bruce doesn't sound any less concerned when he gently says, "I know. I want to help everyone too, but sometimes you need to help yourself first."
(Duke is not supposed to be out patrolling at night, but he's going to help his ridiculously large family — besides, he's not even that tired!)

Summary
"Just a couple of orphans," Duke mumbles sadly, laughing with just enough self-deprecation that it could be passed off as genuine, "Sitting on the roof of a mansion, all alone, wallowing in our self pity. Should we start a club? Make matching bracelets?"
Bruce gives him a funny look, his eyes impossibly soft, as he whispers, "I'm not alone."
Duke turns to him with a confused frown.
"I've got you." Bruce says, like it's that simple.
(After a painful reality check, Duke and Bruce sit on the roof and look at the stars.)

Summary
"I'm sorry Duke, he's gone," Duke hears him say, his heartbeat loud in his ears, "Steady, son. You are safe now."
Duke blinks away the blurriness in his eyes, gazing up at Bruce helplessly. There are undoubtedly waves of tears leaving his eyes now, but Duke finds he can't stop himself, especially when Bruce squeezes his hand. There's a pin prickling sensation across his body, bubbling his blood beneath skin, but Bruce's hand is warm.
"I'm sorry," Duke whispers, devastated.
Bruce squeezes his hand, face pinched with worry and fading terror, "You're going to be alright."
(Duke gets hurt on patrol, Bruce responds.)
