Summary
There cannot be two runners on the same base. When the batter takes off for first, you have no choice but to go as well, even when you know you’re running straight into a force out.
This is just one of the basics of running the bases, another one of the fundamentals that Chris’ father taught him, before he was even in little league. Chris had argued—why, he wanted to know, would I run straight into an out? And he’d had to learn that it wasn’t a choice, that when the person behind you is coming up on your spot, you run, and when you do, you’re also giving the both of you the chance to keep the game alive—no matter how small the chance.
Chris has never been good at pretending that it's not in his nature to act in bold strokes.

Summary
In his right ear, an excited crowd cheers.
The thing is, Kazuya doesn’t know much English. He knows a few things, basics like hello and hi and the days of the week, and most of the others relating to baseball. He knows balls and strikes and pop flies. He knows the roar of a crowd that transcends the barriers of language, and he knows that Chris sits close right now, close enough that their shirtsleeves brush and he can almost feel the stick of another boy’s skin after a game played under an afternoon sun.
It's game seven of the American League Championship Series, and Chris' flight to Houston is delayed.
