Dorothea frowns, fed up. She’s reached her limit reprising this role. Like peace, like war. Felix knows what happens next.
Her body leans closer. Despite her dimmed complexion and grim, chilling attire, she’s as warm as ever. “Come join us, Felix,” she says, extending the inevitable invitation. “You know the place.”
Moments later, she’s nothing more than a whisper on the wind.
Dorothea and Sylvain help Felix unwind after a battle.

Summary
Sylvain tries not to let his eyes wander too much further below Felix’s slender waist, but he can’t help lingering on his long legs and—is this man wearing thigh highs? He’s going to need a moment to process that. More than a moment, really.
Add in Dorothea, who’s turned fluid and giggly as she watches Felix watch Sylvain, and the latter can only admit one thing: he’s looking at the hottest couple he’s ever met. They belong on the cover of a magazine. On billboards. In perfume ads. Sylvain already knows he’s going to be seeing their faces wherever he goes after tonight.

Sylvain rolled his eyes at Felix’s complete lack of tact, even as Dorothea giggled. She liked how exasperation looked on Sylvain—and that made her like Felix even more. “Felix, this is Dorothea Arnault—star diva of the Mittelfrank Opera Company. We’ve been acquainted for several years now.”
“A woman who’s been able to tolerate your company for that long? Impressive.”
Oh, Dorothea wanted the appalled look on Sylvain’s face framed. Her giggle evolved into full-on laughter as she drew her attention away from Sylvain in favor of Felix. “It has its difficulties, to be sure. But I do love a good challenge.”
She didn’t miss the glimmer in Felix’s eyes as she carefully enunciated ‘challenge’.
Sylvain Jose Gautier is a scoundrel, incapable of holding down a relationship. Dorothea has watched him wreak havoc and avoid responsibility for years, unable to unravel the source of his aversion to commitment. When his best friend Felix returns from war, ready to take part in the social season, Dorothea only has to take one look at the two of them to understand the problem. “If you knew the... uncertainty would stress you out this much, why did you agree to the plan in the first place?”
As he says it he smiles, resisting the urge to laugh. No matter how many times it comes up, no matter how on-board all relevant parties were at the time, explaining the whole concept always sounds so childish. No pun intended. Sylvain continues: “Don’t tell me you were so enamored by another opportunity to one-up me that the gravity of the task slipped your mind?”
Felix’s nose scrunches in embarrassment, because the assessment is spot-on. “I… may have been possessed by the spirit of competition at the time. It may have clouded my judgment,” he admits.
Or: polyamory makes having children just the tiniest bit complicated. But then again, Sylvain and Felix always have to make things more difficult than they need to be.
