After the events of Cold Steel IV, Ash, unwilling to forgive himself, runs away from both Thors and New Class VII, winding up in Crossbell. But his friends aren't going to give up on him so easily. Musse, in particular, resolves to convince her stubborn classmate to come back to them - by using her unique intellect to tell him *exactly* what will happen to him if he doesn't.

It is actually fairly obvious, Altina thinks. She’d taken note of their true motivations right away. She also knows Juna can be somewhat… oblivious, in matters such as these… but did she really not see it?

During New Class VII's next field exercise, Ash, Kurt, and Musse fail a seemingly straightforward monster extermination mission because they're too busy trying to show off for their new field commander, Juna. There are consequences. Altina volunteers to picks up the pieces. Rean is proud of her.

“Correct,” Musse sighs. “The fact of the matter is that I have no siblings. Should I perish in an airship crash tomorrow - or perhaps a boating accident, if my assassins have a sense of humor - there would, indeed, be a crisis of succession.”
“However, this particular problem also presents an opportunity,” Kurt says. “If Musse was to declare that she is courting someone...”

Kurt quickly concludes he's the only possible partner in such a deception. Naturally, he is eager to help his friend... but he has other motives, too. In the romance novels, a false courtship is the ideal opportunity to spark genuine connection - one he's been struggling to create on his own...
It doesn't quite work out that way.
