At first, Sojiro wondered if maybe the kid had butt-dialed him - he couldn’t hear anything. But then he heard a ragged breath, and Sojiro felt his whole body tense with some deep uneasiness.
“H-hey, Boss.”
Oh. Oh he didn’t like the sound of the kid’s voice. Not one bit. Something was wrong.
“I… I wish you’d answered. I wish… wish someone had answered…”
Sojiro froze in place, feeling like his lungs and heart had ceased functioning as the kid’s words washed over him. The sound of his voice, panicked, whispering, hurting.
Oh god, no. No no no, kid, no.
He knew. Somehow, Sojiro knew with absolutely certainty what this was, and he didn’t need to hear another word. He would listen to the full message later, but right now he needed to call Akira back. He needed to call back five fucking minutes ago. His hands were already shaking as he pressed the necessary buttons to send out the call, holding his breath as he held the phone to his ear.
Please. Please, answer me, kid. Please, let me be wrong.
