He ran the fingers through his hair, smoothing out any knots carefully and gently, massaging his scalp with the lightest of pressures, careful to only use his fingertips, not nails. The self care article that he often went back to for advice was very adamant on this step. During the process, Aventurine could almost forget himself for a moment and pretend that it was not his scarred and boney fingers that went through the motions, but bigger and far smoother hands that had only a few caluses, gained painstakingly after years of holding a pen; a paintbrush; a carving tool, in that same position millions of times.
The delusions did not last long, however. His smaller hands were still unmistakably his, and his house was still as empty as ever.
