Summary
A yellow and black snake carcass, spiraled neatly, lies within the sand. Hajime can’t tell whether it’s beautiful or sickening.
He takes a second to breathe, to look into its dead eyes. Tentatively, he reaches forward, his fingertips grazing the cold, slick scales. They leave him with a shudder wracking up his arm, goosebumps swimming up to the back of his sun-kissed neck. His thumb traces along a coiled spine, stopping only when it slips too close to where his (but not his) foot crashed down hours ago.
