We all have soulmates, and every soulmate pair shares an animal guide. The Guide is there to lead you to your One True Love, and they represent the aspects of the psyche that you both share. They appear when you're about to meet your soulmate, and often materialize in moments of great personal crisis, offering hope and support. There are stories upon stories about how someone's Guide appeared to lead them to their One True, or how the barest glimpse of their Guide eased their hearts and gave them hope in the midst of despair. The newly-rescued almost always attribute their Guide with giving them the strength and courage to hang on.
Animal Guides are ephemeral, ethereal, and elusive. They are, most often, no more than a warm presence or flicker out of the corner of one's eye. They are incarnate symbols of perseverance, optimism and hope. Foretellers of happiness, and the grand destiny of love.
Except for geese. Geese are assholes.

"Bonding is a natural thing that happens between compatible people. Person can have only one bond. When Tony wants to bond with his partner he finds out that he already has a bond. Now he has to find the person that he accidentally bonded with so many years ago when he was still a child."
The only thing Tony remembered for certain was how he'd felt: Joy, belonging and comfort like he'd never found before or since. For a couple minutes out of his entire misbegotten life, he'd known what it meant to be whole.
It was impossible to forget. It had ruined him. Every new friendship, every potential relationship, only offered the forlorn possibility that he might feel that way again. But he never did. And after forty-something years of looking, he didn't think he would.
He still woke up with tears on his face and an emptiness inside him like a black hole had swallowed his heart. But that didn't happen as often anymore. He could even manage not to think of his lost Half for whole hours at a time.
Most of the time, he was okay.

"Oh yay! Super excited!! I've been sitting on a couple prompts haha Imagine a Sentinel/Guide AU- Tony is a guide, something kept from the public as Howard always saw it as weak. Bucky is a sentinel, and HYDRA made a point to never send the Winter Soldier after any guides to avoid natural instincts breaking through their programming. They send him after Tony, not knowing better."
The Winter Soldier had never had a Guide.
They told him that he must not approach or engage a Guide. They didn't explain why, but he knew better than to ask. He was the Winter Soldier, Sentinel and weapon. The only things he needed to know were what they told him.
And two days ago, they'd told him to kill Tony Stark.

Bucky bites his lip, which would be more fetching if he didn't look so horrifically distressed. Not to mention he still can barely meet Tony's eyes. "Could you…." He closes his eyes, then takes an obviously fortifying breath. "Could you…stay with me? Please?" His voice is barely a whisper, weighted with shame. "I'm sorry. I know I shouldn't ask. But. Could you stay?"

The Asset called the creatures 'Soft Pills', because he had to take pills often enough that he recognized the shape. He knew there was another name for them, something like 'Sum', but no one ever told him.
He liked the soft pills. They were warm and nice to touch and made pleasant noises. He didn't have one of his own, but that was reasonable. He didn't have a soul, so how could he have a Soulmate? The little creatures appeared for humans; not weapons. But sometimes, if he'd done very, very well on a mission, one of his Handlers would let him hold their pill for a little while.

You were the only actual innocent victim in that whole fucking mess and I should have helped you. Not just when I realized how Zemo had played all of us, but especially after I saw that tape. I already knew what Hydra had done to you. Not…not as much as I do now, but I knew. I should have helped. I should have protected you. But I decided to have a tantrum instead. That's on me. I have to live with that." He took another breath that shuddered a little bit. "But I want you to know that I am so, so incredibly sorry for what I did. And I swear by all I hold holy—which isn't much, I know, but it counts—that I will never hurt you again. And I will do anything I can to make this right."
Bucky stared at him. "Do you forgive me?"
