Summary
Adam is straightening up to continue down the aisle when the back of his neck prickles—the same way it does when he senses it’s going to rain the next afternoon. Perturbed, Adam turns around and sees his mother.
She’s standing at the mouth of the aisle, clutching a box of screws in her hand. Adam recognizes them as the same sort used for the radiator in the trailer’s kitchen that Adam worked on every winter when it inevitably crapped out. They must finally be fixing that rusty old thing.
Adam’s mother looks as surprised to see Adam as he is to see her. Then her eyes shift to the baby in his arms, and her surprise doubles.
“Mom,” Adam says dumbly.
