Summary
The process of getting tree atop car is tetris-style torture. Even with their height, the Ford seems perpetually too tall, and the length of the tree makes the crown hang dangerously across the dash on their first attempt of hoisting. Blue eventually hops out to help direct. Ronan feels like he’s in a stage production playing the role no one else wanted. What’s worse is he can’t be fully mad–not at Mrs. Gansey’s delusions or Gansey’s easy appeasement or Ronan’s love of him-because without them, he wouldn’t have gotten to see Adam’s face twisting with focus, or hear him grunt with effort, or swear low as the tree threatens to roll off the truck’s hood. It’s just a small, under-the-breath fuck, but Ronan’s mind can’t help placing that sound in all different situations. He can’t help wondering what Adam’s arms would look like flexing without so many damned layers on.
Fucking goddamn December. Beautiful, awful December.
Adam is a contract worker getting through the holiday season. Ronan is given a last-minute mission to replace a Christmas tree for the Gansey Family Holiday Gala. They meet in a parking lot.

Adam was the picture of focus, except that Ronan knew her better than that. Adam fidgeted way too much when she was truly absorbed in her work, a sort of byproduct of how she couldn't comport herself when she was focused. Her posture was also too good, her expression too concentrated, and she wasn't biting her lip or her nails. She wanted Ronan to think she wasn't paying attention to her.
Ronan clicked her tongue. She'd have to do something to get Adam's attention, and she had just the thing. Pulling off her shirt, she tossed it at Adam. It hit her girlfriend in the face, slid down her chest. Adam's eyes flicked towards her, in a glance that was definitely meant to just be quick, but her gaze caught. Ronan was now shirtless, with nothing underneath. It was clear that had surprised Adam by the subtle way her eyes widened. Dilated, too. Good.

They hadn’t had any contact since. Their mutual friends never said his name around Adam. He assumed it was the same on Ronan’s end. They all had an unspoken agreement of avoidance and pretending none of that ever happened.

Except Old Man McDentist didn't stand in the doorway when Ronan looked toward it. A very non-geriatric guy did. Youngish, but not young. Maybe early thirties—Ronan's age—or possibly a year older. Two at the most. How long was dental school? Four years? Eight? However long, the guy didn't look like a fresh graduate in his perfectly pressed chinos and light blue collared shirt, a gray quarter-zip fleece layered on top of it with his practice's name and logo embroidered on one side of his chest, his name embroidered on the other.

It might have been the pain thinking, but Ronan prayed to God that cavities would start rapidly eating away at his teeth, if only so he had more reasons to visit this guy at his office. Gaunt cheeked. Dusty haired. Blue eyed—and shit, they were pretty blue eyes.
