She should have some words ready, something moving and perfect that will snap Mom out of it. The two of them will pack up the car and drive out west and set up a life and they’ll call Donny sometimes to see what’s happening at home and hang up before Dad gets on the line.
“Mom …” she tries to start, and all the rest is dust on her tongue. -
