The O’Hara’s send Taggie to work for the Baddingham's to earn extra money to prevent them from losing the house. When WW1 broke out, the large estate was offered up as training grounds for soldiers. This is where she meets Rupert Campbell-Black, a captain in charge of getting his troops ready for battle.
When he and his troop are sent off to war, Taggie (despite her dyslexia) spends the war corresponding with Rupert, who is stationed in the trenches of Northern France.
