They stood in a ragged line on the salt-stained deck: Jester Lavorre with her blue-tinged skin and mischievous smile, Fjord Stone shifting his weight from boot to boot, Vex'ahlia examining her fingernails with feigned interest, Mollymauk Tealeaf's jewelry tinkling softly in the sea breeze, and Percy's own husband, Vax'ildan, whose dark hair whipped across his face as he avoided Percy's piercing gaze.
"Which one of you," Percy said, his voice starting as a low growl before rising to a thunderous roar that sent nearby gulls scattering, "is going to explain to me WHERE OUR FUCKING MAINMAST IS?!"
Vax and Percy swore they'd start talking about their problems. No more secrets. Is it technically a secret though if they both know and are just trying to solve it in their own way?

"Freddie?" Vax's voice cut through the library's hushed atmosphere.
"Hmm?" Percy didn't look up from his weathered copy of Emma, thumb absently tracing the frayed edge of page 94.
"Ten minutes." Vax tapped his wristwatch, the leather band worn thin at the buckle.
"Fuck really?" Percy's eyes widened behind smudged lenses, a rare curse from his usually measured mouth.
"Sorry sunshine." Vax's smile was crooked, revealing the chipped incisor from last year's hockey incident. There was a reason Vax avoided team sports.
"How did I ever make it to a race before I had you?" Percy asked as he unfolded his tall frame and stood next to Vax, his white hair catching the golden afternoon light streaming through dusty library windows.
"It's a mystery. Now get your shoes on and go warm up or the whole school will lynch me." Vax nudged Percy's pristine track bag with his scuffed boot.

Summary
After it was all over, Vax found himself in Percy's workshop. It, too, had died.
Lying on the cot, Vax comes across a journal hidden between the pillow on the mattress. A journal, about him.
It has pictures of him, poems about him, and most importantly, a letter written for him.
A declaration of love, in which Percy thanks him for saving his body and his mind.
In this letter, Vax learns things about Percy that he never knew, and he learns why he didn't see the Raven Queen take Percy.
She doesn't have his soul, the very thing Percy had built to give him vengeance, had taken vengeance on him.
Vax can't have that, he can't accept that. He's saved Percy before.
Now, he's going to save his soul.
