Tony steeled himself for something. A tearful embrace, maybe a hug that turned into an iron grip around the throat. Instead, Peter dropped his duffel on the couch he had just spent an hour perfecting. A small death inside.
Right,” Tony muttered, clearing his throat. “So—”
“When am I going home?”
Sharp. No warm-up. Kid even left the earbuds in, music leaking loud enough to prove the point: not listening. Then he flopped onto the cushions with an undue hardness.
Tony swallowed the wince. “Wow. Okay. Straight to the big existential. You only just got here.”
Peter shrugged, gaze fixed somewhere past him. “Yeah. I know.”

Tony Stark met Mary Parker at a party. Fourteen years later, there’s a furious teenager on his couch and a past he thought he’d buried at the door. Peter is brilliant, guarded, and far too old for fourteen. Between boardrooms & blown circuits, Tony’s learning the difference between fixing a problem and raising a kid. “Not the, uh--” he forwent answering and took the offered scissors to give them to Pepper. He reminded her, “You kicked ass.”
Pepper huffed, taking the scissors victoriously. “‘Course I did.”
She cut the cord.

The hands leave him in an instant. Peter sags in relief, his danger sense slowly but surely fading away. His saviour comes into focus, and Peter has to hold back a groan when he sees who it is.
“What the hell is going on here?” Stark demands. “Does somebody wanna explain why they’ve got my foster kid pressed up against the wall like he’s some kind of criminal?”
“Your- your foster kid?”
Stark throws his hands up in the air with exasperation. “Yes, my foster kid. Lordy, do you two go outside? Or better yet, do you even work here? How have you not heard about this?”

“You didn’t get my coffee,” his dad says, halfway through his burrito. He has been in a state of low, simmering irritation all evening, and apparently this is how long it took for him to find a reason to blame Peter for it.
“You didn’t tell me to get coffee.”
“Do you have eyes?”
“Yes,” Peter says. “I have eyes.”
“So you could have checked if we needed coffee without me telling you every little thing, Jesus Christ.”
