“They’re dangerous. You saw, as I did.”
“I am dangerous too,” Dagger countered. He let his crossed arms fall to the side. Jason immediately studied the man’s palms for hidden weapons. “I was dangerous, but when I appeared on your front porch, you did not force me to sleep in the holding cells. You brought me to my room. You regarded me as a person, though it’d been much time since I’d last been treated as such.” Dagger’s eyes hardened. “Do the same with them.”
Jason remembered, clear as day, being held down by his wrists with an iron grip while he was told in no uncertain terms that he was nothing more than a cloth monkey dressed up to dote on Talon. In a heartbeat, he could be replaced with a doll, so he’d better perform better than the straw-stuffed stacks they had lined up elsewhere.
Or,
Escaping the Court doesn't undo the years of conditioning in a single day. Things are hard, and Jason just can't figure out how he's supposed to act without fumbling the chance he's been given. For his sake and Talon's, he'll need to figure it out.
